Jets Prospect Update | January 24th, 2017

WHL prospects continue their post-World Juniors tear and Niku and Cederholm get in on the point-scoring in this week’s prospect update.

Jansen Harkins helped the Cougars to three wins this week (3-1-1), continuing their reign as the top team in the WHL. Harkins recorded three goals and three assists as well as a pair of shootout winners.

Matteo Gennaro continues to make his case for a contract with the Jets. The 2015 7th-rounder is on a six-game point streak (11 goals, 2 assists) including back-to-back hat tricks on the 15th and 18th.

Jordy Stallard has made a positive impact in Prince Albert, putting up four goals and three assists this week as the Raiders managed three wins. Quite impressive considering the team had eight all season until this week.

Michael Spacek had the best week of any Jets prospect as far as points are concerned, scoring a goal and adding an incredible seven assists. Spacek was third star of the game on Saturday against the Royals with an impressive five assists.

Logan Stanley played once this week and recorded a secondary assist. Stanley left the game early with what was originally called a “lower body injury”. After almost a week of “lower body injury” reports, Stanley has been ruled out for approximately the next four months following surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. Stanley may be unavailable for the Memorial Cup, which is hosted by Windsor this year.

Luke Green added an assist to his point totals this week. Green has not scored a goal since his trade to Sherbrooke, but has 12 assists in 12 games.

Mikhail Berdin stopped 34 of 36 on Saturday in his only game of the week, a great bounce-back game after he was pulled last week after allowing three goals on eight shots. Sioux Falls took the game in overtime. 

CJ Franklin only fired one shot on net this week, but he made it count picking up a rebound in front of the net. Minnesota State came out of the weekend with a tie and shutout loss to Michigan Tech.

Tucker Poolman had a single assist on Tyson Jost’s 11th of the season. Poolman continues to direct plenty of shots on net, totalling five this week. North Dakota lost both games this week including a shutout loss on Saturday.

Erik Foley recorded two assists this week, both on goals by Scott Conway. Providence escaped their weekend conference games with a couple close wins over UMass-Lowell.

Mason Appleton was held without a point this week, but he did get three shots on net and was 58% in the faceoff dot.

Matt Ustaski scored his second goal of the season in a 4-3 loss to Minnesota on Friday. Ustaski also won 10 of 15 faceoffs.

Jack Glover was scratched both nights in Wisconsin.

Pavel Kraskovsky scored his seventh goal of the season last Thursday on a breakaway. It proved to be the game-winning goal as Lokomotiv won 3-1 over Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod. Kraskovsky won just 8 of 25 faceoffs (32%).

Sami Niku continued his point streak this week, now at five points over the last four games. A welcome sight after a stretch of 10 games without a point.

Jacob Cederholm was a point-per-game player this week, scoring his first of the season and adding a pair of assists. Full disclosure, his goal and assist happened the day before last week’s update but I forgot to check if he played on the 16th!

The Manitoba Moose won one of three games this week, now sitting at a record of 16-19-3-2. 

Both Brendan Lemieux and Kyle Connor scored a goal on Wednesday, but the Moose fell short by a single goal in a loss to Texas. 

The Moose then travelled to San Antonio to begin a two game series against the Rampage. In game one, Eric Comrie stopped all 25 shots he faced for his first shutout of the season. Jack Roslovic scored the first goal of the game on a great individual effort, and Chase De Leo put it away late on a great feed from Kyle Connor.

In game two, the Moose were down by a single goal for the 3rd period, but couldn’t capitalize on any of the 11 shots on goal to tie the game. San Antonio scored a shorthanded empty netter with 11 seconds remaining to put the game out of reach.

The Moose are back in Texas tonight and then into Charlotte for a back-to-back against the Checkers. Jamie Phillips did not play this week and awaits a chance to start his first AHL game.
