Jets Prospect Update | January 17th, 2017

At the end of a tough road trip for the Jets, we take a look ahead to the future. A fantastic week in the WHL and plenty of positives elsewhere in the prospect world this week in our prospect update!

Jansen Harkins was held scoreless the first two games of the week, but turned it around with two assists in Lethbridge. Harkins scored twice in a row in the 3rd period on Saturday to power the Cougars to their third win in four games. Prince George continues to lead the BC Division with a record of 31-12-2-0.

Remember when I typed out that Matteo Gennaro had the best week of his WHL career in the last update? Well, he topped it. Six goals and an assist this week helped the Hitmen record at least a point in three of four games. Gennaro recorded a hat trick on Sunday as he willed the Hitmen to a 6-5 overtime victory over the Hurricanes.

Jordy Stallard was dealt to the Prince Albert Raiders at the trade deadline along with a seventh round pick in 2017 for Luke Coleman and a fourth rounder in 2018. Stallard takes over second in scoring to Simon Stransky. In his first game as a Raider, Stallard scored a goal against his former team. Unfortunately for him, the Raiders are the worst of the worst in the WHL with just 8 wins on the season.

Michael Spacek has picked up right where he left off before his World Junior stint, scoring three goals and three assists. Spacek scored an incredible highlight reel shorthanded goal against the Raiders on Friday, deking out a couple players on his way to the net.

Logan Stanley recorded a single goal this week, but made it count on a nationally televised game. Stanley had nine shots on goal in four games.

Luke Green continues to flourish with the Phoenix, assisting on two more goals this week. Green is still looking for his third goal of the season; he has not scored since October 12th and 14th. In an effort to confuse me, he switched back to #55, giving #19 to recently acquired QMJHL vet Cody Donaghey.

Mikhail Berdin started the weekend off on a positive note, stopping 38 of 39 in a 4-1 win over Des Moines on Saturday. Berdin was called on again the following night, but was pulled after allowing three goals on eight shots.

CJ Franklin and the Mavericks split a series against Bowling Green last weekend. Franklin did not record a point on Friday, but pushed the Mavs to a 5-3 win on Saturday on the strength of his three points.

Tucker Poolman and North Dakota also split a weekend series against Miami University, but Poolman was not a factor on the scoreboard this week. Poolman did manager an impressive 11 shots on net in two games.

Erik Foley played in two of Providence’s three games this week. It is unclear why Foley was not in the lineup on Friday. In his return to the lineup, Foley put up a goal and an assist in a 4-1 win over Vermont.

Mason Appleton recorded a goal and an assist this week, but it was not enough as Michigan State dropped both games to top-ranked Penn State.

Jack Glover dressed in one of Minnesota’s games this weekend but was not a factor. Matt Ustaski and Wisconsin did not play this week.

Pavel Kraskovsky and Lokomotiv skated to three straight wins this week. Kraskovsky was 60% in the faceoff circle and put four shots on net.

Sami Niku recorded his first points since December 7th, adding three assists to his point totals. Niku is averaging just over 20 minutes per game in ice time and 3.6 shots per game.

Jacob Cederholm has returned on loan to IK Pantern of Sweden’s second-tier league, Allsvenskan. It seems there is no room on HV71’s defence this year for Cederholm. He was +2 in Saturday’s game.

The Manitoba Moose played three games this week, including a makeup game in Tucson that was postponed after Craig Cunningham’s collapse. Cunningham was able to visit the rink on Saturday night!

The Moose got out to a 2-0 lead last Tuesday in Tucson very early in the 1st, but had no answer as Tuscon struck back with five straight goals.

Returning home for a two-game series against the Wolves, Eric Comrie stopped 32 of 35 on Saturday in a 4-2 loss. Ryan Olsen scored his third of the season and Kyle Connor had his fourth.

Firefighter Appreciation Day saw a much better result. Pavelec stonewalled the Wolves, stopping 43 of 44, on their way to a 4-1 win. DeSalvo, Kosmachuk, Olsen and Lodge had the tallies for the Moose. 

The Moose will be auctioning off 26 game-worn and game-issued jerseys starting at 7pm tonight. All proceeds will benefit the Manitoba Fallen Firefighter Memorial Foundation.

Jamie Phillips recorded his 19th win of the season last night, stopping 21 of 24, but now shares the league lead with Toledo’s Jake Paterson. Back on Wednesday, Phillips was third star of the game stopping 31 of 34 in an overtime loss to Kalamazoo.
