Jets Nation Report Card: Scheifele Be Good

With the Winnipeg Jets all but officially eliminated from playoff contention, the focus now is just focusing on finishing strong and building towards next season. 

One player who that is certainly not lost on is Mark Scheifele. 

During an eight-game point streak that extended through wins against the Colorado Avalanche and the Vancouver Canucks this past week, Scheifele scored eight goals and four assists for 12 points. His streak ended Wednesday night in a 4-1 against the Calgary Flames. 

Regardless, Scheifele helped the Jets go 2-1-0 the past three games heading into tonight’s game against the suddenly struggling Chicago Blackhawks. 

Now, let’s check out the report card and see how some other Jets players faired this week. 

Dean’s List: Mark Scheifele

See above. The kid is firing on all cylinders right now and he seems to be emerging as the Jets top centreman of the future. He’s still young, so the key for Scheifele is consistency. The past few weeks, he’s been the best Jets player on the ice. 

Honor Roll: Tyler Myers, Marko Dano, Drew Stafford, Alex Burmistrov

There were actually quite a few others I could have put here, as the Jets had a strong week despite the hiccup against Calgary. However, I was looking for players who are continuing their strong play rather than players who are beginning to get back on track. 

Myers, Dano, Stafford and Burmi are four players who continued their strong play this week. 

Myers continues to a strong force on defense as well as putting up points and being productive in the offensive zone. 

Dano is starting to get comfortable with his new team and continuing to put up points, recording three points (two goals, one assist) in the past three games.

Stafford is the kind of player that even when he’s not putting up points, he’s still doing the little things right and being a responsible two-way forward. As of late though, he’s been putting up points as well, adding another two goals in the past three games. 

Burmi on the other hand, kind of disappears at times if he’s not putting up points. He’s getting much better at being a better two-way player though, and he’s being rewarded for it. He’s added a goal and an assist to his name during the last three games. 

Academic Probation: Ondrej Pavalec

Pav has gone 1-1-0 in his two starts this past week, recording a .897 save percentage. It’s also the second straight week that he’s been outplayed by Hutchinson, who’s recorded a .921 save percentage in his last two starts.

Failing: 

Honestly, I got nothing. 

I tried to find someone or something to rip apart but there really isn’t anyone or anything that’s been that bad this week. If I had to put something here, I’d say special teams. They’ve definitely been below average, but that’s basically been the case all season. 

Faceoffs have also been an issue lately. The Jets won just 39.8% of draws during the last three games. 

But, ya know, that’s just me knit picking :-). 

New Enrollment: Nic Petan

Class, please welcome your new classmate (sort of) Nic Petan. He’ll be joining us at least for tonight’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks. Everyone, please make him feel welcome.
