Jets Nation Recap: Rinne steals one for the Preds

The computer crashed as Rhys Jessop and I were working on a podcast for tomorrow, so welcome to the midnight edition of Jets recap.

The Winnipeg Jets were unable to continue their 2 game win-streak or their 4 game point streak, despite the injection of two new players. The Preds were severely out possessed and out chanced, but came away with the 3-1 win.

Rinne is a demi-god – That guy is good at stopping pucks. Rinne stopped all 25 at even strength and 7 of the 8 shots on the Jets power plays. He had some highlight real saves, but also played a great positional game making a lot of tough stops seem easy. Rinne was assisted by the post three times, but still was the best player on the ice. When the opposing goalie posts a 0.970 save percentage, you are going away with the win very often.

Pavelectricity or Pavlolec? – Over the last two games we’ve seen four different goaltenders. Devan Dubnyk (0.940), Michael Hutchinson (0.967), Pekka Rinne (0.970), and Ondrej Pavelec (0.885). One of these things is not like the other.

This is not blaming Pavelec, because he lost this game far less than Rinne won it, but it’s not pretty all the same. Pavelec has not beaten a team above the playoff line since November 4, 2014. Wins are not the best statistic, but for all saying the Jets are better defensively:

2014-15 Hutchinson win percentage: 60%

2014-15 Pavelec win percentage: 42%

2011-15 Pavelec win percentage: 43%

The skaters – It’s tough to blame the skaters when you out shoot, out chance, and out possess your opposition at evens but hit a hot goalie. Still, the Jets need to cut down the penalties. The Jets out played the Preds at evens but penalty issues kept things closer than they should be. The power play actually created more chances than the Preds power play did, but still… needs to be better.
