Jets Nation Recap: Pavelec Saves Enough

Game Notes:

• The story leading up to the game was Pavelec’s return and he was good but not great. Fortunately, he didn’t have to be great. The game didn’t start well for the veteran netminder. The first Coyote shot taken by Josh Jooris eluded Pavelec and found the back of the net. The feeling of dread started to take over the MTS Centre. The Jets tied it on Bryan Littie’s goal but penalties and a vicious Oliver Ekman-Larsson snipe gave the Coyotes the lead into intermission. But Pavelec settled down in the second period, making an incredible stick save off Radim Vrbata, while the Jets exploded for three goals in the middle frame. Overall, Pavelec stopped 30 out of 33 shots for a .909 save percentage. Pretty good but not great. But the save will make highlight reels across North America.
• The Jets received some much needed secondary scoring tonight. Blake Wheeler, Andrew Copp, Joel Armia (Man Crush), Jacob Trouba and Nikolaj Ehlers all contributed with goals for the good guys. Wheeler and Ehlers aren’t surprising but it’s a big help when players such as Copp and Armia (Man Crush) provide some offensive punch. For the Jets to move forward, everyone will need to chip in offensively, especially with Patrik Laine still sidelined.
• Speaking of the rookie sensation, Laine skated today for the first time since suffering the concussion in Buffalo on January 7. While this is a very good sign, the Jets need to be very careful with their prized freshman. Concussions still carry many unknowns and rushing back Laine could have disastrous consequences. The Jets need to be sure Laine’s 100% before he returns to game action.
• One note on Burmistrov. The former Jet recorded an assist and led the Coyotes with 20:44 in ice time. Burmistrov was noticeable and involved all night and was arguably the best Coyote tonight.
