Jets Nation Recap: Jets Surprisingly Blank Flames

It wasn’t a work of art, but the Winnipeg Jets improved their preseason record to 3-1, after a 4-0 shutout over the Calgary Flames at the Pengrowth Saddledome.
Ondrej Pavelec flopped around more than a flounder on dry land but he managed to stop all 31 shots that came his way. Pavelec was very fortunate at times as this won’t go into any goaltending instructional videos but he won’t be that lucky once the regular season starts.

Game Thoughts:

  • Chase De Leo continued his solid play in the preseason by recording 2 assists while showing off his speed that caught the Flames by surprise. The former Portland Winterhawks star will most likely begin the season with the Manitoba Moose but he’s playing himself into that first call-up position when injuries happen.
  • If they gave out the Norris Trophy in the preseason, Mark Stuart would be a front-runner. Stu scored his first goal of the preseason, finishing off a lovely feed from De Leo. It won’t last into the regular season but I’ll give props to Stu for scoring a nice goal.
  • Patrick Laine looked more comfortable in his second preseason game. He would have scored had the post not got into the way of his cannon. Laine isn’t afraid to shoot from anywhere and he’ll be so much fun to watch.
  • The Jets power play clicked again going 2/5 with the man advantage. Ben Chiarot and Paul Postma tallied the markers. Is the absence of Pascal Leclaire coaching the power play the positive spin the Jets needed? We’ll find out in the regular season.
  • Brian Strait is bad. Send him down already.
