Jets Nation Recap: Jets Overthrow Kings In Shootout

Game Notes:

• The Kings opened the scoring as Tanner Pearson’s wrist shot eluded Connor Hellebuyck. The shot may have deflected off of Dustin Byfuglien’s stick, but it’s a shot that Hellebuyck needs to stop. The good news is that Hellebuyck bounced back after that weak goal and had a solid outing, stopping 27 out of 29 shots for a .931 save percentage.
• A nasty moment occurred midway through the first period as Kyle Clifford drove Kyle Connor’s head into the boards. Clifford was assessed a five minute major for boarding and the Jets made them pay. Power play goals from Adam Lowry and Marko Dano gave the Jets the lead. Connor did return but saw limited ice time.
• Nic Petan is a beauty. His vision and hockey intellect are simply off the charts. They can’t send him back down to the Manitoba Moose can they? The Jets need to find a way to keep Petan in the lineup when everyone gets healthy.
• We mentioned Dano earlier scoring the Jets second goal but more should be made of his solid play since he’s been called up. If Dano keeps up his positive contributions, there could be a couple of veterans on their way out. (Alexander Burmistrov. Chris Thorburn.)
• Quinton Howden made his Winnipeg Jets debut and he didn’t look out of place. While one game doesn’t make or break a career, the early reports suggest that Howden should get a longer look before a permanent decision is made.
• The Jets had a very good second period but they looked fatigued in the third and it cost them. Tom Gilbert equalized midway through the third and the Kings dominated play and puck possession in the final 20 minutes. Three games in four days is a tough stretch but every team will go through it a few times this season (blame the World Cup) so it’s something the Jets have to deal with.
• This was the first shootout this season for the Jets. Patrik Laine showed off his skills with a dazzling move to fool Peter Budaj. Mark Scheifele won it with a wrister over Budaj’s blocker. This wasn’t a stellar game for Scheifele so it had to be a relief for him to seal the game in the skills competition.
• Nikolaj Ehlers doesn’t want to see overtime ever again. After his own goal Friday night in Colorado, the Dashing Dane took a shot in the face that required stitches. Next time the Jets go to extra time, Ehlers may tell Paul Maurice “I’ll sit this one out thanks.”
