Jets Nation Recap: Jets outlast Oilers in Fuel-ish contest

The Winnipeg Jets outplayed the Edmonton Oilers on Monday, even if they required a shootout to defeat a lottery-bound opponent.

That’s hockey. Sometimes you stomp a team otherwise, but fail to protect the slot well enough and get burned. That’s essentially what happened to the Jets on Monday night.

Luckily for Winnipeg, Michael Hutchinson found his form late and the Jets persevered to emerge with a shootout victory.

Three Keys

Downed Jets – The Winnipeg Jets lost a pair of key depth forwards in Monday night’s game. In the first period Mathieu Perreault left the contest with a lower-body injury that looked pretty serious following a hit by Oilers defender Jeff Petry. Then in the third frame Drew Stafford sustained an upper-body injury and left the contest.

For a Jets team that only just addressed their forward depth issues – seemingly, at least – with the Evander Kane deal, these ailments could significantly hamper their playoff push.

Ty Ty!

– Allowing a brutal team like the Edmonton Oilers to hang around is bad enough, but if there was one silver lining on Monday night it was that newly acquired Jets defender Tyler Myers scored his first goal with the franchise. It was a pretty sick one-timer off of an offensive-zone faceoff win.

Life on the second pairing seems to suit Myers well.

Can’t beat Fasth – Let’s get real: there’s only one reason the Oilers even forced overtime and it was the play of Fasth.

The Oilers have received league worst goaltending this season, but Fasth was on point today (with a little bit of help from his posts). He wasn’t good enough to stop Bryan Little from picking corners seemingly as will, but when you make more than 40 saves in a game in which your team gets completely stomped in all three zones, you’re forgiven when you make a few mistakes.

In the shootout Fasth was injured though by an unbelievably good stutter step Blake Wheeler move, which opened up the door for the Jets to win in the skill competition.
