Jets Nation Recap: Jets Lose A Heated Battle With the Blues

Unfortunately
the Jets could not pull a win out of this game. The Blues would go up
early in the second and would see the Jets constantly fighting from
behind. What we did see was a heated game that was entertaining to
watch by two teams that do not like each other.
The Jets would end up losing 4-2. Lets take a look at the game.

The
Jets had two power plays
in the in the first. First
power play had great movement from the first unit. Second did not
have as much success setting up, but on the rush, Ehlers was able to
make a nice sauce to Scheifele who almost tipped
the puck in the net mid air. Second power play
started 4 on 3, and had some more sweet movement. To close out the
first period, Pavelec had a terrific save to keep the games at 0s.
There
was an iffy roughing penalty called against Tyler Myers. The penalty
should have been for being too big.

The
Jets looked fast in the first and it showed against the Blues. St. Louis could not handle the Jets ability to skillfully move the puck
around. If only Nic Petan was in the lineup.

Jets
pretty much started the second with a power play. Perrault and Myers
had some sweet chances, but were unable to capitalize. However, after
the Jets’ powerplay ended, the Jets gave Tarasenko some room and he
promptly sniped a goal past Pavelec. And then the Blues took a
penalty and Perreault scores his first of the season. The Gomez line
caused a turnover and managed to sneak a puck in past Pavelec, no one
had Upshall on his goal as he stood at the back door. Then the Jets
answered when Edmundson took an interference penalty and Ehlers
scored on a Stafford screen. The Blues were more noticeable this
period, and the score sheet reflects this, but thankfully the Jets had
an answer to each of the Blues’ goals.

The third
period saw the game take a wrong turn for the Jets. St. Louis started
to dictate play more and the Jets started to take penalties. These
teams clearly do not like each other and this shows with the
unfortunate headshot by Jacob Trouba. There were some dicey moments
when Pavelec went down after taking a Slapshot awkwardly in the
blocker arm from Parayko, but quickly showed he was fine with a nice
glove save. Unfortunately, the Blues would continue with the momentum
and Vladmir Tarasenko would end up scoring and this goal would be the
game winner and Carl Gunnarson would seal the game with his first on
the power play

Jacob
Trouba will most likely be receiving a call from the NHL about his
elbow to Troy Brouwer’s head. Brouwer was able to pass the concussion
tests and returned to the Blues’ bench. Kids, no matter how mad or
frustrated you are, head shots are not cool.

THREE KEYS

Consistency:
Gary Lawless said it right, Ehlers has shown he is a skilled player
and can possibly be a dominant player. He was great during the first
two periods, but during the third, Ehlers was not noticeable and it
showed. The Blues were able to control play a lot more in the third.
Maybe Ehlers is more important than we thought. Big Buff was
noticeable at the end as he tried to jump start his team to even the
score. However, the start of the game was did not have him being that
noticeable.

Youth
Movement:
That being said about Ehlers, Scheifele and Ehlers had some
great moments against the Blues. There was one sweet feed from Ehlers
to Scheifele which had Scheifele almost score a goal on the rush by
tipping the puck on net in mid air. Scheifele had a sweet defensive
play that saw him lift the stick of a Blues player poised to score on
a wide open net. Ehlers had a blast from the point which ended up
going in the net off of Drew Stafford. Unfortunately, Nic Petan was
missed in this game.

Playoffs
in October?
The Blues and Jets do not like each other and this game
had more of a playoff feel to it. There were heavy smart hits, some
bad hits, and unfortunately some frustration showed with an elbow by
Jacob Trouba. The siege of Byfuglien at the end of the game was very
telling of how the two teams feel about each other.
