Jets Nation Recap: Jets Blank Avalanche. Joel Armia Is Beautiful

Back-to-backs are never easy. Especially when the team in question, your very own Winnipeg Jets played last night at the friendly confines of the MTS Centre, then fly out to Denver, where the air is thinner than Ryan Getzlaf’s hairline, to play 24 hours later. But the Jets came through as they blanked the Avalanche 1-0, thanks to a 37 save performance from Michael Hutchinson.

Game Notes:

  • I have a confession to make. I have developed a serious man-crush on Joel Armia. The Finnish winger had another outstanding game as he set up Shawn Matthias for the game’s lone goal while demonstrating how to play a complete 200 ft game. You know the feeling when you’re weak at the knees and butterflies hit your stomach when that special someone walks buy? I get that feeling when Joel Armia is on the ice.
  • We mentioned Hutchinson’s performance at the top but let’s expand on it further. After Connor Hellebuyck’s solid showing last night, Hutchinson needed to match that tonight if he wanted to see more crease time. Hutch came through with flying colours, in particular in the third period when the Avalanche were pressing for the equalizer. After some struggles earlier in the month, the Jets goaltending seems to have found its groove. That’s a very good sign going forward.
  • Patrik Laine will be a star player in this league but he still needs some work in the defensive aspects of the sport. His zone coverage or lack thereof led to a glorious scoring opportunity in the third as well as going for the empty net before he hit centre ice in the final minute. Remember, he’s only 18 and he will learn.
  • Chris Thorburn saw power play time tonight. This isn’t good. Chris Thorburn shouldn’t see ice time period. Here’s hoping Paul Maurice inserts Marko Dano into the lineup against Buffalo on Sunday.
  • It wasn’t as noticeable tonight but I really like the chemistry Nikolaj Ehlers and Kyle Connor have with each other. They will work magic together for years to come.
  • One cool thing the Avalanche do is they play the Super Mario 1up soundbite whenever they kill a penalty. Well done Colorado.
