Jets Nation Recap: Cardiac Kids Do It Again

7 years agoThe Winnipeg Jets are like a bacon triple cheeseburger. They’re plenty of fun to consume, but they’re not so good for the heart. Once again the Cardiac Kids of the NHL had to overcome a third period deficit to win a game. Four third period goals including the first two goals in Brandon Tanev’s career gave the Jets a stirring 5-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena.
Game Notes:
- Once again, the Jets got off to a slow start as Luke Glendenning opened the scoring as the Red Wings dominated the first period, outshooting the Jets 15-8 in the opening frame. Solid goaltending from Connor Hellebuyck and Patrik Laine’s equalizer late in the period saved the Jets in the first 20 minutes.
- Speaking of Laine, his first period marker moved him into a tie with Steven Stamkos and Artem Amisimov for the overall goals lead in the NHL with 7. If Laine can continue at this pace, he will receive serious Calder Trophy consideration.
- The sophomores aren’t bad either. Nikolaj Ehlers had a fabulous game, recording 4 points (1G, 3A) while showcasing his blazing speed. The Dashing Dane is a beautiful sight when he is flying down the ice.
- Video replay helped the Jets in their comeback. Mark Scheifele’s goal early in the third was aided by the crossbar camera that caught the puck crossing the line under goalie Petr Mrazek that the TSN cameras did not show. Tanev’s first NHL goal hit the back bar and came out immediately. Play continued for a few seconds until video review called down, stopped play and reviewed the good goal. So can we stop the nonsense that the NHL is against the Jets?
- Tanev’s second goal was a thing of beauty as he took a perfect feed from Dustin Byfuglien, sped in all alone and roofed it over Mrazek’s glove for the game winner. Tanev won’t be a big time goal scorer in the NHL but the Jets will need contributions like this every once in a while from the bottom six, if they want to see playoff hockey.
- Injuries are ravaging the Jets lineup. Mathieu Perreault and Joel Armia (man crush) missed tonight’s game after suffering knocks last night in Washington. Tyler Myers was placed on IR which has made the already depleted Jets defence corps even thinner. Nic Petan and Andrew Copp were called up and played serviceable minutes but the Jets need to get healthy soon.
- Byfuglien once again led the team in ice time as he logged 28:12 of action. Mercifully it was under 30 minutes but one wonders how long can Big Buff can continue at this rate.
