Jets Nation Recap: Alberta Road Trip Is A Disaster

Good news. The Winnipeg Jets don’t have to visit Alberta again this season. Bad news. The Jets were swept on their two game trek into Wildrose country. Despite a better team effort compared to last night, (which isn’t saying much) the Jets lost 3-2 to the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Arena.

Game Notes:

  • The Jets started brightly in this one as they looked to bounce back after Saturday’s travesty. Mathieu Perreault scored his first goal since opening night to get the ball rolling. The goal was much needed for Perreault as injuries and inconsistent play have slowed him down this season. A healthy and productive Perreault will be beneficial for the Jets down the road.
  • The Oilers tied it early in the second on an Oscar Klefbom marker but the Jets regained the lead as Chris Thorburn one-timed home his third of the season. We’ve been harsh on Thorburn here but even us critics have to admit the team loves Thorbs. The smiles that lit up the Jets bench after Thorburn’s goal spoke a 1,000 words on how much his teammates like him.
  • In Saturday’s game, the second period was the Jets downfall. Tonight, the third period proved to be fatal. Mark Letestu evened the score early in the third period on the power play. Once again, the Jets special teams let them down. All too familiar refrain for Jets fans.
  • Patrik Laine will be a superstar in this league. But even great players will have nights to forget. Laine had a terrible moment as he put the puck into his own net, which proved to be the difference in the game. It was heartbreaking to see the 18-year-old phenom’s face after the goal. Blake Wheeler consoled him on the bench like a good captain does but Laine learned a valuable lesson. Hockey can be a cruel game.
  • We mentioned special teams earlier. Let’s revisit that area. The Jets went 0/2 on the power play, generating scant scoring opportunities in the process. The penalty kill unit gave up one goal on three chances while letting the Oilers enter the zone with ease. Both phases need to be addressed in the coming days as the Jets finally have a few days before their next game.
  • Blake Wheeler left the game late in the first period after sliding hard into the boards back first, after a check delivered by Patrick Maroon. While Wheeler did return, he looked like he was in pain. The Jets can’t afford more injuries. Joel Armia, Nic Petan and Tyler Myers are still on IR while Perreault and Bryan Little only returned recently. Can we get a break from the Hockey Gods please?
