According to James Mirtle, the Winnipeg Jets have invited veteran Finnish/KHL player Janne Pesonen to training camp as a try-out.
The name might seem familiar because Pesonen spent one season with the Pittsburgh Penguins organization. The smallish winger scored an impressive 32 goals and 82 points in just 70 games in the AHL that year but was never able to convince the Penguins he was NHL material. He appeared in just 7 games for the big club that year, scoring zero points.
Since then, Pesonen been skating in the KHL for Kazan Ak-Bar. Last season he managed 14-goals and 28-points in 46 games for the club, good for 7th on the team in scoring.
The move is a zero-risk, moderate reward one for the Jets. Pesonen has scored at high rates in a number of leagues and is an established professional hockey player. If he deson’t make the cut, the club hasn’t risked anything by inviting him to camp. If he manages to turn some heads, however, then the Jets may have added a useful middle-tier veteran to the team for next to nothing.
