Some early-season defensive woes might mean fading the Winnipeg Jets in moneyline betting until they start to get healthy.
Winnipeg is a +130 away underdog (wager $100 to win $130) while the Pittsburgh Penguins are a -155 home favourite with a 6.5-goal total on the NHL odds for Tuesday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. The Jets are 6-7 in their last 13 away games against Eastern Conference teams, with the total going OVER in eight of those contests. The Penguins are 13-7 in their last 20 home games against the Western Conference.

Jets at Penguins | OddsShark Matchup Report

The Jets are 1-2-0 entering their final game of a season-opening four-game Eastern swing that has betrayed some leakiness in their defense. Having a blueline corps that is thin beyond Josh Morrissey has led to being 28th in the 31-team NHL with 4.67 goals allowed per game  and 27th in save percentage at .865. The total has gone OVER in eight of the Jets’ last 15 away games as a +120 to +140 moneyline underdog, and the top two lines led by centers Mark Scheifele and Andrew Copp have helped Winnipeg have a positive shot differential through three away games.
Connor Hellebuyck will be back in goal after consecutive starts by Laurent Brossoit. Hellebuyck allowed five goals on 31 shots against the New York Rangers in his season debut on Wednesday.
The Penguins are 1-1-0 so far this season and have had a two-day break since scoring seven goals last Saturday against the Columbus Blue Jackets. While Pittsburgh has lost center Evgeni Malkin to a long-term lower-body injury, it still has Sidney Crosby leading a team which is 15-5 in its last 20 home games as a favorite of -140 to -160 at sports betting sites. Pittsburgh has allowed an average of 35.5 shots on goal in its two games, which suggests they are prone to being in high-scoring-chance games.
Penguins goalie Matt Murray has a 2.55 goals-against average and .930 save percentage in his first two starts this season.
The Jets will return home to host the Minnesota Wild on Thursday before visiting the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday.
