Welcome to
the latest instalment of the IceCaps Recap where we review all the weekly
activities of the St. John’s Ice Caps, the AHL affiliation of the Winnipeg
Jets. Similar to the Future NHEhlers
weekly article, we review all the stats and news we can find for your IceCaps.

The
Statistics

This point
of the season, when covering teams similar to the ones the Ice Caps are in, is
always depressing. The IceCaps have been
mathematically eliminated from playoff contention so from a fan perspective
winning is nothing more than a moral victory. This does give the Winnipeg Jets franchise an opportunity to play the
younger players in larger roles to see how they handle the work.

Friday’s
0-3 Loss vs Providence

[ IceCap’sRecap ] [ Highlights ]
Not a great
game to start off the week for the IceCaps. They were dominated by the Providence Bruins while their opponents
backup goaltender was a wall and earned a shutout. Connor Hellebuyck had a slightly down game
but he was not the cause of the loss. At
least their penalty kill was perfect.

Saturday’s
4-5 Loss vs Providence

[ IceCap’sRecap ] [ Highlights ]
The team
had much better effort in Saturday’s game and turned the tide on Providence and
were able to dominate them. Joel Armia
had a great game, scoring 2 goals; he had been quite since the Evander Kane
trade. The penalty kill was perfect
while the power play managed to score a goal.
Unfortunately it was the goaltenders who did not show up to this game. Peter Budaj was given the start, normally a
smart move, but he allowed 3 goals on 6 shots and was pulled. Hellebuyck came in relief and made 12 of 14
saves and ultimately the Bruins won 5 – 4.

The
Transactions

  • Eric Comrie
    has been reassigned from Tri-Cities
  • Connor Hellebuyck has been recalled to Winnipeg

The
Schedule

The IceCaps
have a similar schedule for the next two weeks.
St John’s plays two games at home against a team that is better than
them in possession.  Hopefully some of
the recent additions of prospects will get some ice time.
