Departing Ben Chiarot Inks Three Year Deal With Montreal

4 years agoThe Montreal Canadians announced this morning that they had come to an agreement with Ben Chiarot, which means Winnipeg will be down another Atlanta Thrasher carryover and that leaves them with just two Thrashers draftees left (Bryan Little and Manitoba Moose Peter Stoykewych).
While Jets general manager had mentioned briefly on July first that he had been in active conversations with the unrestricted free agent on a deal to get him back on contract with the Jets, it appears that the conversations had not gone well and Chiarot decided to move on.
The defenseman signed a three year contract with an AAV of $3.4 million.
The twenty-eight year old Ontario native was selected 120th overall in the 2009 draft and spent seven seasons with the Thrashers/Jets system between AHL affiliates the Chicago Wolves and St. John’s Icecaps before coming up to work on the Jets defensive line on a full time basis in the 2015-2016 season. He marked a total of sixty-four points (12 goals, 52 assists) in his career as a Jet and has played over three hundred regular season games with the franchise.
Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin believes that Chiarot is a solid player who will help improve the defensive group. “He is the type of player who can play some big minutes and be used in different situations” Bergevin commented. Adding Chiarot hopefully provide them that push to get back into the playoffs after coming so close last season. That is if he doesn’t get into scraps with his captain as ben famously did a couple of seasons ago…
In the off-season, Montreal have added two other players aside from Chiarot to their system with Cole Caufield who was drafted 15th overall at the draft this year and goaltender Keith Kinkaid. They’ve also parted ways with Nicolas Deslauriers, Jordie Benn, Antti Niemi, Andrew Shaw and most notably, Sebastian Aho.
