It wasn’t an action-filled night at Canada Life Centre on Tuesday goals wise, but it was still an electric atmosphere at the barn, nonetheless. The Jets picked up their first win over the third iteration of the Jets 1.0.
Connor Hellebuyck earned his second shutout of the season, stopping all 21 of the Utah Hockey Club’s shots. This was Hellebuyck’s 39th career shutout, and he is now seven shutouts away from surpassing Jets 1.0 goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin, who finished his career with 46 shutouts.
Overall, this was a defensive, tight-checking game from both teams. Only 49 shots were taken in the game, and Kyle Connor was held off the scoresheet for the first time this season.
Vilardi led the Jets with four shots, while Dylan Samberg led the team in ice time, logging 24:19.
The first period ended scoreless after 20 minutes. I want to mention that the toe drag from Colin Miller was amazing. I saw Logan Stanley try it later in the game and would love to see more “magic hands” from the third pairing.
Rasmus Kupari drew the softest hooking call of the period, and the Jets successfully killed that penalty along with all four penalties they faced on Tuesday night. The Jets doubled up Utah in shots, 12-6, in the opening frame.
The second period saw both teams go to the box twice. It would take just 1:55 on the second power play before Gabriel Vilardi tipped in the first goal of the game. No point for Connor, but that man did so much work to open up the Utah penalty killers for the goal to even happen.
The Jets out shot Utah 10-8 in the second period.
Swiss-born member of the Jets’ “LAN” line, Nino Niederreiter, played in his 900th NHL game and scored twice in the third period to lock up the Jets’ fourth straight win.
Two great moves from Nino on these goals: First, he got the puck out of his zone to Adam Lowry, and then he put on the silkiest mitts to put the Jets up by two. There’s a reason why I call this the best line in all of hockey right now. All three men work hard on every play and can be found in every nook and cranny on the ice.
Niederreiter has scored 230 goals and 455 points in 900 games, averaging just over 0.5 points per game in his 14-season career so far.
The Jets were outshot in the third period 7-6 and went 1/2 on the power play in this game. They remain an impressive 44% on the power play. For context, the 2022-23 Edmonton Oilers had the best power play in a single season at 32.9%.
The next Jets game is Thursday night against the team that beat them in five games in last year’s playoffs: the Colorado Avalanche.
