Today the Jets sit grounded. Game postponed last night and the end of the season looming, the Jets have not had a lot to look forward to in the past bit. Neither have the fans.
The draft is coming, but the Jets need to start building for now because they have the future already looking bright. What should they do at the 2017 draft?
The Jets have attempted to play hockey all season, but failed miserably. Injuries have plagued the Jets and players have needed to take leaves for family reasons. However, the team has failed miserably at hockey and is waiting to be mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.
This will leave the Jets with a decently ranked first round draft pick. The issue is the Jets have had a number of these high picks in the past few years and have not been able to capitalize on the skill they have acquired through the draft.
There is an obvious need on defense. Toby Enstrom has been plagued with injuries and is on the wrong side of the peak of his career. The Jets have nothing in terms of replacing what Enstrom brings to the table. After Morrissey and Enstrom the Jets are looking at playing Ben Chiarot, Mark Stuart and Julian Melchiori. Or, they will have to play Postma, Myers, or Trouba on their off side.
The general rule that most coaches go by is to keep defenseman on their strong side, if it is at all possible.
I’ve been a strong supporter of trading assets in return for a good left shot defenseman. If the Jets plan to compete not just for the playoffs, but in the playoffs, then they need to supplement their potential firepower with another strong defenseman.
Depending on Toby Enstrom to have a major bounce back year is not a recipe for success.
What would you do with the Jets’ first round draft pick?
