WWYDW: Potential Shake Up on the Blueline?

Feb 10, 2016, 12:15 ESTUpdated: Invalid DateTime
Welcome to this week’s version of What Would You Do Wednesday where you are asked a question and debate among yourselves what the answer is. Unfortunately, the only prize you will receive will be the most Twitter mentions.
This week’s WWYDW asks if the Byfuglien deal means that the Jets need to reshape their blueline with a more friendly contract and if swapping Jacob Trouba for a more friendly contract is the answer. Trouba is a RFA at the end of the 2015-16 season and is looking for a significant contract.
Take a read and let us know what you think!
After Dustin
Byfgulien being resigned for a decent contract for $7.6 million a
season over 5 seasons, the amount of cap space is starting to dwindle
for the Jets in need of new contracts. Andrew Ladd is the player
getting the most attention, but Mark Scheifele and Jacob Trouba are
RFAs at the end of this season and will be seeking pay raises as
well.

Trouba is reportedly
seeking a $6.5 million deal for 6 years. Not including Trouba, the
Jets are already spending over $21 million on their blueline. If you
add Trouba’s rumoured asking price, the Jets are looking at having
over $28 million spent on defence.

The issue here is
the Jets have an internal cap because they are a budget team. The
Jets have given term to depth players who are replaceable through
free agency and have handicapped themselves as a result.

Trading Scheifele
would be a huge mistake, as the Jets need as much offence upfront as
they can get and Scheifele is only going to get better.

When it was
announced that Travis Hamonic of the New York Islanders had requested
a trade to a team in the West, a Hamonic-Trouba swap was suggested.
Hamonic holds a $3.857 million cap hit throughout the 2019-20 season.

that could be very friendly to the Winnipeg Jets, if Hamonic can

Another player the
Jets may want to look at if they are hoping to swap Trouba for a more
friendly deal is Chris Tanev from the Canucks. He is under contract
throughout the 2019-20 season and holds a decently friendly contract
of $4.45 million.

Tanev does not have
the offensive potential of Trouba, but he is one of the best
defensive defenders in the NHL at the moment.

One thing is for
sure, if the Jets choose to swap Trouba out for a player holding a
better contract, it will be a very unpopular decision.

The Trouba conundrum
also points to how poorly management has been able to fill holes with
players who have appropriate contracts.

What Would You Do
Jets Nation?
Jets Nation?
Does Travis Hamonic
or Chris Tanev sound like a good swap? Is there another defender
under a cap friendly contract that the Jets should look at swapping
Trouba for?

Should the Jets roll
the dice and resign their young players and hope their cap issues
resolve themselves?
