Any worries of a slow start for @Patrik Laine after missing all of training camp due to his contract negotiations have been put to rest as he put up eight points this past week in four games played and earned himself a nod as the NHL’s second star of the week.
It’s obviously the first time Laine has been named a league star this season, but for his career it’s his fifth such honor. He was named a first star in February of the 2016-17 season, named a star in two different weeks of March during the 2017-18 season and last season earned the league’s first star after his five goal night in St. Louis last November.
The eight points in the week was helped out by a four point night against the Minnesota Wild, but it was also his play against the Penguins and Blackhawks on the road that helped the Jets to a three game win streak. The amount of assists was a pleasant surprise from a kid known for his goal scoring, but fans should be rest assured he still wants to light the lamp.
I asked Laine today about if he sees the value more now in assists (to be fair, I fumbled the question like a moron). Still, not a bad response: “No, I still want to score. I would still want more goals than assists.” #NHLJets
Not only does the star-making week for Laine put to rest any worries of a slow start, but it’s also some sweet vindication of his thoughts shared a couple of months earlier when Laine suggested that he should be playing on the Jets top line with @Mark Scheifele and @Blake Wheeler.
(We’ll ignore the fact Laine was taken off that top line last night against the Penguins, hopefully this also serves as a reminder to Paul Maurice to keep him on that top line)
We certainly look forward to seeing more of this from Laine as the season continues!
