This week the crew at Jets Nation revisited the Ladd trade, again. They also briefly discussed the playoffs and who they were cheering for.
Looking at Ladd’s performance with the Blackhawks, are you glad the Jets made that trade?
Garret: Yes. I said it quite a few times here, but IMO the Jets could not afford long term contracts on both Ladd and Byfuglien, and that Byfuglien was the better choice. I like Ladd, and in a vacuum he’s a player the Jets should like on their team, but it’s a cap and budget constrained world. Dano and the Jets 1st round pick this season should help with the loss.
AWheeler: Regardless of how his time in Chicago ends up I think it was the right move to make at the time. Byfuglien was the more important signing to make, and Ladd got a strong return for a rental.
Cammers: I think the fact that Ladd has not been the top so player the Hawks thought they were getting is what makes the deal sweeter. The Jets have a legit top six prospect in Dano that is getting better all the time. Ladd will produce more initially, but decline with a huge price tag.
What has surprised you so far these playoffs?
Garret: Not really. The only team I expected with some certainty to be leading but isn’t is the Anaheim Ducks. Other than that mostly expected each of the series to go as they have for the most part. I mean, I do view LA as better than San Jose, but not enough that the series has surprised me.
AWheeler: While it’s not super surprising based on the numbers coming in, it’s still a bit of a shock to see LA and Chicago both on the brink of elimination four games into their first series.
Cammers: I think Joe Thornton has been the most surprising thing for me. I knew he had a bit left in the tank, but he’s been dominant. He’s the MVP of that team for sure.
Are you cheering for any teams? If so, who?
Garret: I have some friends in management on the Florida Panthers, so I have given them some cheers. I have been cheering against the Hawks too, to assure a better draft pick for the Jets from the Ladd trade.
AWheeler: No one team has really grabbed me to this point, but seeing the same teams win all the time tends to bore me a bit. Only three teams have won the cup in the past six years and it’s looking like a good bet that none of them will be a threat to win again this year come second round. I’m looking forward to seeing a new team win it all this year, and maybe even someone break through and win a franchise’s first championship.
Cammers: From the East, Florida. I’m a huge Luongo fan and would love to see him do well. Plus, what Jagr has been able to do is pretty outstanding. From the West, it’s a toss up between Nashville and San Jose. I’m also a fan of Reimer, but he’s obviously not playing right now.
