Jets Nation Round Table – March 31 – The Kyle Connor Edition

Mar 31, 2016, 12:33 EDTUpdated: Invalid DateTime

The wait for the off season for the Jets is almost over, but there’s still hockey to talk about. Welcome to this week’s edition of the Jets Nation Round Table.
How much does Kyle Connor play? Assuming he signs with the Jets before next season.
Garret: Assuming he does sign, which the Jets may try to avoid burning an ELC year (despite maybe being a good thing), I would think Connor plays all the games. The Jets are mathematically eliminated and Kyle Connor is a player you want to get a good idea of the NHL play and pace. You want him prepped for next year.
Art: I’m still of the opinion he doesn’t play this year and signs over the summer and part of me thinks that if he was going to play, a deal would have been done by now. The moment he signs he of course plays so maybe at the most he plays two games this season?
Cammers: If he signs, I think he’ll be given every opportunity to show what he’s got. It would be nice for the Jets to have some hope for next season coming out of this season and Connor can bring that. I’m excited to see what he can bring at the NHL level, the Jets have a good player here.
After the signing of Brandon Tanev, are there any other NCAA free agents that you would hope to see the Jets sign?
Garret: No one in particular. If there is some high scoring left-shot, puck-moving defenders, the Moose could certainly use a few. The right side may improve with the addition of Tucker Poolman to add to Brendan Kicthon and Jan Kostalek, but they need some help on the left side. A goalie to play back up to Eric Comrie or act as depth in the ECHL would be nice as well.
Art: I don’t know if the Jets are in the running for anyone at this point, but I’d be all for the Jets bringing in Alex Lyon from Yale – although Alex may take one look at the Jets prospect depth in goal and pass. Otherwise I think the Jets have done well enough with Tanev and Denham but getting one more goalie prospect would be fantastic.
Cammers: I think the Tanev signing might be the only big name signing we’ll see the Jets do. The Jets obviously need depth, but they’ll probably fill that with July 1st. Obviously, a college goalie would be nice because Hellebuyck will be with the Jets full time and Comrie will need a back up.
What is your take on the Jimmy Vesey situation? Was Poile’s reaction appropriate?
Garret: Someone else wisely pointed out how quickly GMs rely on “it’s a business first” when trading players they had verbal agreements with to not trade. It’s not perfect but that’s life. It’s not a loophole, all prospect rights expire (it’s how we were able to draft Brendan Kichton after his rights with Islanders expired). It’s just the way business is.
Art: Poile’s reaction was laughable. Vesey was well within his rights to take the action he did and to me it sounds like the Predators tried to corner the kid m two or three different times into “unofficially” agreeing to sign with the team and that’s not how these things should be done. The Preds will be alright with their prospect depth, but they looked bad in this situation even based on how they said things went down let alone the Vesey camp disputing it.
Cammers: On one hand, I understand Nashville’s frustration they invested time in scouting and developing the player. But on the other hand, factoring Vesey into your plans before you actually have him signed is plain dumb. I think it’s a smart move by Vesey to choose what he wants because he can slot in and help a team right away. Maybe he’ll sign with a team that needs a player like Vesey for extra depth and that depth will put them over the top to win.
