Jets Nation Round Table: It’s The Off-season (Finally!) Edition

Jun 17, 2016, 21:30 EDTUpdated: Invalid DateTime

Welcome to the Jets Nation Round Table. A lot has happened in the NHL, the Penguins won the cup, but we had some other things to discuss. For example, the Ducks hired Randy Carlyle?
Take a read and let us know what you think about Randy Carlyle, or any of the other round table questions.
Tyson Barrie has been in the rumour mill for a trade. Would you do a defenceman swap with Tyson Barrie and Jacob Trouba?
Art: I am really against the idea of trading Trouba but I suppose if I was an Avalanche fan I’d be just as against the idea of trading Barrie and yet here we are with rumors swirling around both thanks to the salary cap. I guess this question depends on who you see being a better player over the next four to five years and maybe this is personal bias speaking but I think that’s Trouba. A straight up swap for the two defenseman? No. If the Avalanche threw in a bit extra or agreed to do something like take on Pavelec and his full contract? I’d entertain the idea. Would rather not see him go to a division rival however.
Garret: Sounds like Joe Sakic said Barrie is not on the market while we were writing. I like what Barrie does, and I like what Trouba does. I’m not sure I’d swap unless the Jets feel there is no way they can keep Trouba… and even then I’d prefer outside of the division.
Mack: I’d do that trade. Trouba might have a higher ceiling than Barrie (or at least, more potential to be a well-rounded player) but I love Barrie’s game.
Cammers: Yeah, if this were to happen, I think Colorado would have to spice things up a little. Barrie is a great defenceman, but I think we’re going to see more from Trouba in the coming seasons. Plus, if Trouba wants to stay, as reports are claiming, he may be more willing to shave some money off his contract than Barrie would. So a pick, or taking on of an unwanted contract would be needed, in my opinion.
It has recently become public knowledge that Tyler Myers’ No Movement Clause was not honoured in his trade to the Jets from the Sabres. Is Myers worth trading for the Jets?
Art: Is he worth trading? Absolutely! I think he’s a great bargaining chip for a team that’s looking for a top 4 defenseman (at least I feel he’s that) with a fairly attractive contract salary wise (cap hit wise maybe not so much). He’s an average defenseman but he does have strong points that are easy selling points to other NHL GM’s… His booming shot, he skates fairly well and has good speed, he’s a big man (we’ll leave out the part where he really doesn’t use his size as effectively as he should) .. These are all things that keep his trade stock high and why not take advantage of that if possible?
Garret: Eventually the Jets are going risk losing one of Enstrom, Byfuglien, Myers, and Trouba. The Jets have Enstrom and Byfuglien in full NMCs, which means the choice is Myers or Trouba. I really don’t see an expansion team not going for one of these two, which means the Jets would likely be better served trading one to a team that would protect them, rather than lose the defender for nothing.
Mack: Agree with Garret. Losing Myers or Trouba to an expansion draft would be a huge mistake. I don’t hate Myers’ game, but I wouldn’t be surprised if his trade value is higher than his on-ice value to the Jets.
Cammers: I’m inclined to trade him. Not because he does not have on ice value, but it forces the Jets to look at moving Trouba permanently to the top-4. This would also allow Trouba to be free from Mark Stuart. Paul Postma would work well as a more consistent bottom pairing guy, instead of sitting in the press box.
What do you think of the Randy Carlyle re-hiring by the Ducks?
Art: I think the Ducks made a mistake letting Bruce Boudreau go as it is but in a way I suppose they kind of made up for it by at least going back to a coach they are familiar and did have success with. I don’t think it’s as bad a hire as many would make it out to be, he says he’s a changed man saying all the right things at his press conference, and considering what was out there for coaches he was maybe the best one available, but to me it feels like they simply downgraded and took a poor man’s Bruce Boudreau.
Garret: Oh boy! This is going to be interesting to watch. Maybe Carlyle has learned from past mistakes, but historically he has a tendency of his teams faltering in both wins and shot metrics with him in charge. He won a cup with them, but having a HOF defender on both the first and second pair cures a lot of ailments.
Mack: I think Boudreau is very good and Carlyle is very bad. Bummer for that Ducks core: they have what, three more years as elite players? Don’t see them winning the Cup with ol’ Randy behind the bench.
Cammers: This was a huge mistake by the Ducks’ management. They should have let him start the season on the hot seat and see what Boudreau can do with the return from whatever young defenceman is traded from the Ducks’ roster. I know that Boudreau’s issue his his playoff success, but that falls on the team’s core players as well. Carlyle is just…bad. His teams are out shot and they play a style that does not work with the style of hockey that the NHL is today.
