Welcome to the weekly Jets Nation round table wh ere some of the writers got together over some e-beverages and talked about a few topics concerning the Winnipeg Jets and the Central Division.
Check out what everyone had to say below!
What  do you think of the return in the Andrew Ladd trade?
Garret: Pretty much got the return Cheveldayoff was rumored looking for. I heard he tried to get similar package but Lawson Crouse from the Florida Panthers or Teuvo Teravainen from the Chicago Blackhawks instead of Marko Dano. Overall it was a pretty good return for a player the Jets were looking to saying goodbye to regardless. Dano should fill a middle-six winger role, with potential to be a legitimate top-six and fit with the Jets current core of players. The first rounder is also nice and should add to the Jets pretty solid prospect cupboards.
AMiddleton: I thought it was a fine return. Marko Dano fills the need for a prospect that’s pretty much a certain NHL’er and they got that first round pick and even though it will be a low 25 to 30 pick, the Jets still managed to be the only team to snag a first round pick in this years draft (depending how Dallas does for Calgary’s pick of course). That conditional pick is a nice bonus as well, so for me I’ll be rooting against the Hawks in the first two rounds and failing an early exit I wouldn’t mind seeing them win the Cup both for Ladd and to give the Jets an extra pick even if it is two years from now.
Cammers: I like it. There’s a reason why Chicago asked for him in the Saad trade. While, Dano isn’t as ready as Teuvo, I think there might be a higher ceiling. Hopefully, Dano can contribute at a decent clip next season. The first round pick won’t be that great, but it’s still another highish pick. The player picked should hopefully add to their prospect pool.
Should the Jets have done more at the trade deadline?
Garret: I guess. I mean, it would have been nice if the Jets could have tricked someone to take up some of their dead weight with the Ondrej Pavelec, Chris Thorburn, and Mark Stuart contracts… but realistically that’s difficult to do.
AMiddleton: It would have been nice, but as we all saw it was kind of a quieter deadline and I just don’t think the chances to make deals were there. It would have been nice to get a guy like Brandon Pirri for the price the Ducks paid and it would have been nice to get the goalie situation figured out, but the UFA situation with Ladd and Buff have been figured out so that’s all we really needed.
Cammers: Maybe. There’s obviously not a lot of pieces that the Jets want to move on their roster, if the team doesn’t want to take a step back. As a team with an internal cap, the Jets have to build through the draft and not with big contracts in trades or free agency. It would have been nice to use a middle round pick for Brandon Pirri or Shane Prince, though.
What needs to be addressed the most by the Jets in the offseason?
Garret: Depth. The Jets depth needs to upgraded upon. The top of the roster seems pretty set, it’s the bottom parts that seem to have some large holes. Removal of those previously mentioned contracts to be replaced with more viable depth options would be great, and could quickly bounce the Jets out of this rebuild process and back into pushing for the playoffs.
AMiddleton: The goalies. Hellebuyck should be given every chance to battle for a starters position next season. Pavelec is headed to UFA year and while I am sure a lot of Jets fans would be fine with bidding him goodbye no strings attached, Chevy should still find a way to get some sort of value for a pending UFA. Throw Hutch and Comrie into the mix and it’s clear Chevy will have to make some tough choices and this time he can’t let it go unsolved all summer like he did with Ladd and Buff.
Cammers: Definitely depth. It would be nice to have Mark Stuart as a seventh defenceman than a top four defender. The Jets have a decent top six for forwards, but the bottom six is just abysmal. They need at least two more serviceable players, in my opinion, to fix the bottom six.
What was most surprising about the trade deadline?
Garret: The absence of moves from the Vancouver Canucks and their preference to go for no return due to not getting what they thought the players were valued rather than taking the best counter offer.
AMiddleton: I’m still trying to figure out what Jim Nill was thinking in his deal with the Flames. Jyrki Jokipakka and Brett Pollock by themselves should have been enough to land Kris Russell, but that the Flames also got a 2nd round pick that becomes a 1st round pick if the Stars just manage to win 2 rounds in the playoffs? And it’s not like Jim Nill got a top pairing D-man for that.. Hell he might not even be in the Stars top two pairings depending how you feel about Russell compared to Oduya or Demers. I’m befuddled with that deal.
Cammers: As a life long
Canucks fan, the lack of trades for the Canucks. There were options
out there and now the team has to sit, that could have been traded,
in order for young players to have more opportunity. I was also
surprised by Florida’s moves. I think Barkov and Ekblad are great
players, but the team as a whole is not quite ready for contention.
Yet, they loaded up.
Has any new contenders emerged with the trades made leading up to the deadline?
Garret: I didn’t view Chicago as the team many thought of them, but with the moves they made in the deadline I may change my position. The West looks to be dominated by LA, Anaheim, Chicago, and Dallas (if they can get goaltending) while the East looks a bit messier (although the Capitals are pretty exceptional).
AMiddleton: I had Chicago as my favorite before they made their moves and they still are, but I think the Caps – who were already pretty damn good – did great to add some depth to their team and they’d be my favorites in the East. Mike Weber is a good insurance policy to have in case any of their six defensemen get hurt and Daniel Winnik is an upgrade over Brooks Laich even though we all hate that Laich doesn’t get to stay with the Caps.
Cammers: Chicago. The team added a legit top six forward in Ladd, and Fleischman and Weise also round out their forward depth. Oh, they also have Hossa on the injured reserve, so he’ not even playing. I would not want to face this team in the playoffs.
