Jets Nation Recap: Jets Lose…At the Gates of Hades

Well, that game could not have gone any worse.
The Winnipeg Jets rolled into Montreal playing the second game of a back to back. Little did they know, Montreal was standing waiting for them to brave the gates of Hades, also known as the Bell Center.
Lets take a quick look at the 5-1 loss.

The Jets looked a
little tired to start the first, the power play looked devoid of any power. The track meet started partway through the first and both teams were flying back-and-forth.
The Jets drew another power play, yet it looked like Montreal carried the man-advantage, leading to the Canadiens scoring a short handed goal.
The Canadiens must
have had the Jaws theme song playing because, shortly after the short handed goal, the Habs drew a penalty off of Nic Petan.
The Jets lacked
communication and when their defence activated, they got caught with
a forward defending and out of position, resulting in multiple odd man rushes. The
Canadiens would eventually score off of one such rush with Burmistrov as the loan defender.
Things started to
get a little testy at the end of the first, with big Buff delivering
a high hit on Gallagher and a nasty scrum ensued.
Less than a minute
into the 2nd period, the Canadiens potted a 3rd goal.
Shortly thereafter, Montreal struck again for their 4th
and chased Hutchinson from the net.
This game could be
known as the great Jet meltdown. The Jets were clearly frustrated
with how the game was going; they were not playing as crisply or fast
as they normally play. The defence were also not getting back as quickly
as they should when activating.
The third essentially devolved int the “stop Fleischman from getting a hat-trick” period. The Habs took over
and that was all she wrote, almost… The Jets had one moment, with Mark
Scheifele making a nice play to set up Chris Thorburn for his 2nd
goal of the year.
Unfortunately for
the Jets, the Canadiens showed why they are at the top of the league
right now, PDO aside.
THREE KEYS
Special Teams: Or
lack of special teams. The Jets power play was brutal, it was 0 for
like a 1000 (okay, a bit exaggerated) and even surrendered a shorthanded goal. Their penalty
kill did not play too much better, they had a power play goal scored
against.
Defence: Or lack of
defence? The defence looked sluggish and constantly left Hutchinson
and Pavelec out to dry. They were quick to activate into the play and
slow to head back. Having an active defence is typical of the Jets,
but the blue line just did not do their job.
Weise Contained: The Jets held Dale Weise to 1 assist, it looks the Dutch Gretzky is human after all. Ehlers had an assist on Thorburn’s goal. That goal was probably the only bright spot in the game.
