USA Hockey named their roster for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, and while there aren’t any actual NHLers making the team (thanks so much for that Gary) there are more than a handful of former NHLers and quite recognizable names that made the list.
Not the least of which is former Winnipeg Jet and the “S” in the infamous ‘GST Line’ of the inaugural season back in Winnipeg, forward Jim Slater.
Other nations will follow suit in the weeks to come, naming their Olympic rosters void of current NHL talent but full of former NHL talent, but this got us to thinking, if the NHL wasn’t dumb and let their players go to the Olympics again this year, who from the Winnipeg Jets would be making Olympic teams?
You have your obvious picks… Blake Wheeler would be a lock to make his second US Olympic roster. Patrik Laine would have likely been Finland’s go-to sniper for the tournament.
Nik Ehlers would be a lock for Team Denmark… If… Ya know… They had actually qualified.
Sorry Nik.
Mark Scheifele one would have to assume would have been given a serious look at by Hockey Canada, but his injury may have also dashed his Olympic dreams if there was such a thing.
Those would have been the locks, but then you have your borderline players.
Would Team USA pass on Dustin Byfuglien again? Would they take a chance on Jacob Trouba?
Connor Hellebuyck at this point in time has to be considered one of the three best American goalies playing right now, doesn’t he? Would he have gotten the call?
Heck, would defenseman Dmitri Kulikov have been considered to become an “Olympic Athlete from Russia”? Long shot there perhaps.
Today’s WWYDW is more of a “WWYTW” – Who Would You Take Wednesday.
Which Winnipeg Jets players get your nod as selections for their respective Olympic teams? Let us know in the comments below or on our Twitter feed!
