What would you do Wednesday: Forward Depth

In this installment of What Would You Do Wednesday, I want to
see what you, the readers, would do with Winnipeg’s depth up on forward heading
into the postseason push. Don’t hold back and fight for what you believe in.

THE SCENARIO

As the NHL trade deadline date of March 2 fast approaches, teams
will be looking to add some depth to their teams for the late season playoff
push, and Winnipeg appears to be right in the thick of things this season. The
Jets currently sit fourth in the Central Division with 70 points, and hold onto
the first wildcard spot in the Western Conference. Should Winnipeg be able to
hold on to their position in the standings, it will be the first time the team
will play playoff hockey in Winnipeg, and the first time for the franchise
since the 2006-07 season.
Winnipeg’s depth has been criticized all season, and it doesn’t
appear that GM Kevin Cheveldayoff feels that there are guys in the AHL ready to
come up and help the big club yet. 24-year-old Patrice Cormier has been the
only forward called up from St. John’s this season. T.J. Galiardi has also been
‘called up’ after clearing waivers, but he was never actually assigned to the
IceCaps. Despite being placed on and clearing waivers twice, injuries had kept
the struggling forward up with the Jets all season.
Cheveldayoff has always been the type of general manager who
wasn’t looking to make a trade for the sake of making a trade, but now appears
to be the best time for him to start making a true impact on this team, after
the seven-player blockbuster trade he made earlier this month.
In the Jets game this past Monday against the Edmonton Oilers,
both Mathieu Perreault and Drew Stafford left the game due to injuries and as
of right now, it is unknown if the two of them will be ready to return to the
lineup in time for Winnipeg’s next game. Matt Halischuk is also out of the
lineup indefinitely with an undisclosed injury.
There is no shortage of players available should the Jets look
to bolster their roster with a couple of players before the deadline. The likes
of Antoine Vermette in Arizona, Daniel Winnik of the Maple Leafs, Columbus’ Cam
Atkinson, Jiri Tlusty from the Hurricanes and Colorado’s Ryan O’Reilly are all
on the top 10 “Trade Bait” list on TSN. The Jets still have a surplus of
defencemen, which could help make any kind of trade possible. Any of these
players could be a great addition to the Jets before March 2.

HOW IT WORKS

So now you tell us what you want, which players would you like
to see the Jets go after? What would you send the other way for a ‘rental
player?’ Do you think the Jets need to make some trades? If not, would you call
someone up from the AHL? How would you make the Jets better for this tight
playoff race in the Western Conference?
Feel free to let us
know what you would do, you’re the GM, so you tell us in What Would You Do
Wednesday!
