Embarrassing? Pathetic? Absurd? Whatever word you choose to describe the Winnipeg Jets’ play right now won’t be a positive one, as they dropped their third straight game, 6-3 to the Boston Bruins Thursday night at Canada Life Centre. Winnipeg is now just 3-8-1 in its last 12 games.
The Jets opened the scoring 5:59 into the first period with Morgan Barron’s 4th of the season, his first since Oct. 16 in Philadelphia, to take a 1-0 lead.
That lead didn’t last long. Winnipeg gave up two power play goals in 2:04. David Pastrnak wired a shot past Eric Comrie from the top of the right circle to tie it 1-1 with his 12th of the season, and Casey Mittelstadt put Boston ahead with his 7th after a clean setup by Mason Lohrei.
Just 40 seconds later, Sean Kuraly slipped behind the Jets’ defence, took a chipped pass from Tanner Jeannot, and scored on a breakaway to make it 3-1. It echoed Tuesday’s loss to Dallas, where the Stars scored twice in just over a minute to take a 3-0 lead. Once again, too much puck watching and too many defensive breakdowns.
Before the period ended, Alex Iafallo capped off the five-goal opening frame with his 5th of the season. He cut around Lohrei along the wall, drove toward the net, and went bar down on Joonas Korpisalo to make it 3-2 Boston.

The second period stayed quiet until late, when Hampus Lindholm stepped into a slap shot and beat Comrie for his second of the year, extending Boston’s lead to 4-2.
Gabriel Vilardi made it a one-goal game again late in the period on the power play. Cole Perfetti drove into the crease trying to jam the puck home, and Vilardi knocked it in for his 14th, taking only 10 seconds on the man advantage 17:46 into the period.

Much like the second, the third period stayed scoreless early, until Elias Lindholm delivered the dagger with less than six minutes remaining. The Jets’ defence puck-watched again, allowing Pastrnak to find Lindholm with a perfect pass from below the goal line, and he buried his 5th to make it 5-3.
Pastrnak sealed his terrific night with an empty-netter, his second goal and fourth point, giving the Bruins a 6-3 win and improving them to 19-13-0. The Jets, meanwhile, fall below .500 at 14-15-1.
Every time Winnipeg built a bit of momentum, it vanished instantly. Allowing two power play goals in 2:04 didn’t help. The special teams continue to be a major issue, they’ve now allowed a power play goal in seven straight games.
“I mean, tonight, special teams a big part of it. I think especially on the PK, we got to be better. And then you give up a few grade A’s,” said Morgan Barron. “You can look at the shot clock and whatever, all that stuff, but we’re giving up good chances, and didn’t really give ourselves a good chance to kind of help Comms out tonight, I didn’t feel like.”
The Jets are sinking, and sinking fast. The question is: who’s going to turn this ship around? Will it have to be Connor Hellebuyck? Because right now, the team’s two-way game isn’t giving them many other options.
Game No. 3 of the homestand goes down Saturday night against the Washington Capitals. Puck drop is at 6:00 p.m. CST on Sportsnet West.
