There were just two waiver claims processed in the NHL on Tuesday and they both involved the Winnipeg Jets. The Jets claimed defenseman @Carl Dahlstrom from the Chicago Blackhawks, but lost goaltender @Eric Comrie who was claimed by the Arizona Coyotes.
Dahlstrom, a 24 year old defenseman who was drafted 51st overall in the 2013 NHL Draft, split last season between the AHL and NHL, recording eight points (one goal, seven assists) in 22 AHL games and six assists in 39 NHL outings. A few different scouting reports on him list him as a decent “stay-at-home” type defenseman who won’t contribute a whole lot of offense. He is in the first year of a two year contract signed back in March with a cap hit of $850,000.

The waiver claim does feel like a bit of a head-scratcher for the Jets who are already taken care of in the “borderline NHL talent” department with @Anthony Bitetto and have a couple of other question marks on the blueline in @Nathan Beaulieu and @Neal Pionk. Yet somehow even though Dahlstrom isn’t known for his offense, he might actually be more helpful at both ends of the ice than Bitetto would be.
The bigger news for the Jets may be the Coyotes’ claim of @Eric Comrie. Comrie has seen his stock fall within the Jets organization, going from someone thought of a potential franchise goalie of the future to someone who was looking at splitting starts on the Manitoba Moose in the AHL with Mikhail Berdin.
Comrie is coming off an excellent preseason where he impressed in two starts giving up just two goals. It’s of little surprise to see him claimed with such a low cap hit of $700,000 and while the Coyotes seem ok with @Antti Raanta and @Darcy Kuemper, there is a better chance for Comrie to make the NHL in Arizona than there was in Winnipeg.
Of more importance to Winnipeg, it basically hands controls of the Manitoba Moose goal to 21 year old @Mikhail Berdin who in his first full AHL season will assume the role of number one goaltender for the club.
