Did you think the Winnipeg Jets were finished making moves? Hopefully not, because general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff is at it again as the team has re-signed goaltender @Eric Comrie, who was slated to become an unrestricted free agent.
According to Darren Dreger of TSN, the Jets have brought back Comrie, 26, on a one-year deal that’ll pay him $750,000 in 2021-22.
After being placed on waivers and claimed by the New Jersey Devils just before the 2020-21 campaign opened, Comrie was sent through waivers once again just over a month later and was ultimately claimed by the Jets.
Though the 6’1″ netminder never played an NHL game for Winnipeg this past season, he spent the remainder of the schedule in the AHL with the Manitoba Moose, producing a 1.23 goals-against average and a .947 save percentage through just four games.
Since former backup @Laurent Brossoit is expected to test the free-agent market this off-season, there’s a very good chance he’ll decide to sign elsewhere, which could allow Comrie to serve as starter @Connor Hellebuyck’s backup next season. Having said that, prospect @Mikhail Berdin could also receive an opportunity to compete for that spot this fall.
Free-agent frenzy is scheduled to open Wednesday at 11 am CT.
