The Jets are about to take it outside yet again.
Announced by the NHL during the second intermission of today’s Winter Classic at Notre Dame Stadium, the 2019 Heritage Classic will take place in Regina, Saskatchewan on October 26, 2019 between the Calgary Flames and your Winnipeg Jets. It’s the fifth ever Heritage Classic to take place and the second straight to feature the Jets. It’ll also be the seventh outdoor game in Canada during the modern NHL era.
There had been talk of the NHL doing an outdoor game in Regina for some time now and an outdoor game for the WHL Regina Pats was attempted for last February, but canceled both partly due to cold weather and sluggish ticket sales.
Holding a game in October (average October temperature in Regina ranges from a high of 11°C to a low of -1°C) would make things easier to take outside as opposed to doing it in February (average high -7°C and average low -17°C) and a game involving NHL clubs from nearby Canadian cities in that more pleasant October environment shouldn’t pose the same ticket issues that plagued Regina’s last attempt.
While the game is only 10 short months away, the infrastructure and planning is already pretty much in place for an outdoor game at Mosaic. You can also expect the Regina Pats to be involved with some outdoor hockey action in around that time as well with perhaps the Calgary Hitmen and maybe even the much rumored relocated Winnipeg WHL club involved.
As for uniform options, both teams have already trotted out unis that weren’t exactly historically correct. The Jets heritage look we saw just last night in Edmonton is inspired by a combination of WHA and early NHL looks, while the Flames had a bit of a ‘faux-back’ look from their heritage game back in 2011. The Jets “aviator” unis are also inspired by past looks, but all of these uniforms are based from 80’s and earlier looks.
Sure they could go with their current retro looks, but that’s kind of boring isn’t it? Might we suggest throwing it back to the 90’s for an October 2019 Heritage Classic?
Or maybe we dip into some Atlanta history perhaps?
Ok, maybe that’s a step too far.

Are you interested in heading out west for another Jets outdoor game? What jerseys should the teams wear? Which team is exactly going to be the home team? Regina hasn’t exactly had a history of caring for visiting football clubs from either Calgary or Winnipeg after all…
