With the Grey Cup in the building and wearing arguably the best uniform they have in their current set, the Jets rebounded nicely from a disappointing effort in Los Angeles on Saturday night to play maybe their best game of the season on Tuesday in a 5-1 victory over the Dallas Stars.

First Period

The Jets don’t waste any time getting the 1-0 lead as right off the faceoff, the Jets blitz the Stars zone and get the puck to Patrik Laine who as always makes no mistake beating @Anton Khudobin and giving the Jets a 1-0 lea..
Crap.
Thanks to yet another offside ruling, the Jets miss out on taking a very early lead, but it doesn’t seem to slow them down as they carried play for most of the period. The only real knock against Winnipeg in the first 20 minutes of play was that they missed the net a bunch with their shots, or fired them into the legs and sticks of defending Dallas players.
The Jets do at least get somewhat rewarded for the hard work in the first thanks to a hard working goal from @Nikolaj Ehlers.
Shots finished at 8-3 in favor of the Jets as the Stars didn’t register a shot in the final 12 minutes of play in the first period. For all the “chances” the Jets had, they were only credited with one official high danger scoring chance which seemed a bit low.

Second Period

As good as the Jets first period was, the second period was better as far as the team getting scoring chances and actual pucks on net. Winnipeg continued to pile up shots and like the first period picked up a goal a little under eight minutes into the frame.
They continued to pour it on as the Stars seemingly had zero answer for anything the Jets did and things only got worse when goals started deflecting off their own players.
Yup, that kind of night for Dallas.
After a time out taken, the Stars did manage to have a little bit of push back and engaged in more physical play that frustrated the Jets and caused Patrik Laine to take an awful cross-checking penalty borne solely out of anger. The penalty killed a power play that the Jets had been on, made it four on four hockey and gave the Stars a little bit of life when they took advantage and made it a 3-1 game.
But Laine redeemed himself somewhat (with a little help from @Mark Scheifele) by getting out of the box and jumping into the next offensive play available and getting back that goal he was robbed of at the start of the game.
The second ends with more shots taken by both teams as things opened up, but the Jets firmly in control of the shot clock (21-14) and the score.

Third Period

As you would expect, the Stars had the lions share of shots and scoring chances in the third period as score effects for once worked against the Jets instead of in favor of – which will happen when you start the final period up by three goals. The Jets though defend pretty well around their net and while the Stars do pick up 14 shots in the period as opposed to Winnipeg’s 9, it’s actually the Jets that get the lone goal in the period as Scheifele finally got through for one after having a trio of missed chances earlier in the night.
The final period had a little bit of everything as well. Scrappy play as you’d come to expect from a team with Correy Perry on it, more Connor Hellebuyck goodness and poor @Luca Sbisa getting the old heel to the balls treatment.
On a night the Jets didn’t need Hellebuyck to stand on his head, he still did really well stopping 27 of 28 shots and helping the Jets to their 17th win of the season.

JetsNation’s Top Gun

Hard to pick one favorite player from this game as it was a really strong team effort overall. Laine, Ehlers, Morissey and Scheifele all have a goal and an assist each on the night, Connor doesn’t get as much love from the fans who voted but he had a three point night.

The Boxscore

Next Flight

Thursday should prove to be quite interesting as the Jets now go down to Dallas and will take on the Stars yet again who will no doubt be looking to right some wrongs they committed on Tuesday night. Puck drop from Big D is set for 7:30 CST with the game on TSN 3 and TSN 1290.
