The Winnipeg Jets did give up a 1-0 lead in the third period yet again, but this time rebounded to score three of their own in the final 11 minutes of play while Laurent Brossoit had a good night in net to help the Jets to a 4-1 victory over Calgary.

The Jets much like they did against St. Louis start the game with a goal almost instantly as Jack Roslovic put home a rebound of a Tucker Poolman shot that happened mere seconds after Bryan Little won a faceoff. The Jets continued to play well early on getting out to a 5-1 lead in shots before Calgary seemingly woke up and started tilting the ice in their favor but unable to even things up after 20 minutes of play.

The second period was a scoreless period and didn’t feature much in the way of action outside of a couple of good Jets scoring chances and a couple of good scoring chances for the Flames that resulted off of Jets turnovers. Laurent Brossoit (who ended up making 22 saves for the victory tonight) was strong in net and outside of a couple of questionable puck handling miscues in the first period, had another game where he cemented his role as the Jets backup goaltender.

For a moment there it looked like more of the same when the Flames were able to tie things up thanks to an Adam Rucicka power play goal which ended up snapping the Jets perfect penalty kill streak in the preseason. The power play for Calgary came off of a careless boarding penalty by Dmitry Kulikov moments earlier.

But the Jets were just a bit better on this night as Blake Wheeler tapped home a loose puck that ended up ricocheting to him off a Anthony Bitetto shot, Joona Luoto was rewarded for his strong play in the preseason by scoring on a tip-in of a Logan Stanley shot, and Nik Ehlers picked up an empty net goal.

Winnipeg played far more NHL quality players in tonight’s game and it showed. Any mistakes that were made were taken care of thanks to some solid goaltending from Laurent Brossoit.

Ville Hienola didn’t make it on to the scoresheet tonight, but it’s hard not to be impressed with the skill and poise the kid has shown in this preseason. He played 20:21 tonight in 24 shifts and saw time on the top power play with Wheeler and Scheifele and didn’t look out of place at all.

There isn’t much to pick from tonight for the play of the game, but the crazy bounces the puck took en-route to being a goal scored by Blake Wheeler needs to be seen again to be believed.

These two teams will do this all over again, only in Calgary this time on Tuesday night. Puck drop is set for 8pm CST.
