Winnipeg struck for two goals less than a 100 seconds into their Wednesday night contest against Minnesota and then scored two more goals late in the game to put their first pre-season victory into the books with a 4-1 win over the Wild.

The Jets took shots early and often, almost scoring seconds after puck drop but settling for an opening goal a minute into the game after a long distance pass from Sami Niku sprung Andrew Copp free for a seemingly harmless shot that fooled Wild goalie Kaapo Kahkonen for the 1-0 lead.

The Jets made it 2-0 just 38 seconds later as Andre Copp dished off to Blake Wheeler who again fooled Kahkonen from a bit of distance.

From there, Kahkonen did settle down and stopped 18 of 20 shots faced in the first two periods but the damage had already been done and much like Monday with the Jets in Edmonton, the roster the Wild brought up north didn’t quite have the fire power needed to claw back into the game.

In the third, Minnesota did make it a one goal game as Jordan Greenway was able to get off a one handed pass to the front of the Jets net where Nico Sturm was able to get to the loose puck and put it past Brossoit, but that was as close and as dangerous as the Wild were all night.

Josh Morrissey salted the game away with a power play goal with a little over five minutes left in the game. C.J. Suess picked up the empty netter.

Laurent Brossoit stopped 20 of 21 shouts against to pickup the victory in goal.

Winnipeg played a lot more of their NHL line-up than Minnesota did and it showed for most of the game. They pounced on the Wild early and then played a simple, straight forward game to grind out a win.

There were a few solid picks to chose from tonight, but Sami Niku had a very strong game from start to finish and the two assists early on in the first period – one of them being a long bomb to Andrew Copp for the first goal – helped set the tone.

Almost right away after Andrew Copp opened up the scoring, the combination of Sami Niku, Andrew Copp and Blake Wheeler combined less than a minute later to give the Jets a 2-0 lead.

The Jets next action is back at home with the defending champion St. Louis Blues come into town for a rare pre-season tilt. Puck drop will be Friday night at 7 PM CST.
