The best way to sum up tonight’s Jets loss – 3-2 to the Colorado Avalanche by the way – is this…
In the first period, a period the Jets arguably played well and out-played the Avs, they led in shots, had 12 even strength scoring chances and seven of those were high danger chances.
For the next 41:29 of play, they only were able to muster eight total scoring chances and ZERO high danger chances as Colorado out-shot them 23-16 and proved they wanted the game a heck of a lot more than the Jets did.
One more regular season game left, and then at least four playoff games and at this rate I’m not sure we’ll have any more beyond that. Not the way this team is playing.

FIRST PERIOD

A bit of a frantic start to the game, but it’s one that the Jets carry most of the play in period. An early Avalanche penalty helps the Jets establish a little bit of momentum, but it really isn’t until halfway through the first that Winnipeg really starts to tilt the ice in their favor starting with a Mark Scheifele goal that came off a bit of a goal-mouth scramble. The Avs do challenge for goalie interference but it was ruled that non could be seen.
The Jets take a penalty of their own in the period but it doesn’t really slow them down any as shortly after the penalty was killed, Nik Ehlers scores off a Jacob Trouba rebound to give Winnipeg a 2-0 lead.
Shots end up in favor of the Jets 19-14 but more importantly, high danger chances are led by the Jets 7-3 as they made it a real point to attack the Avs net and goalie Philipp Grubauer.

SECOND PERIOD

Colorado as one would expect comes out much stronger in the second as the teams are more even and trade chances although interestingly enough neither team is credited with any high danger chances according to NaturalStatTrick.com.
The Avs do get on the board a little over five minutes into the period as the Jets defense backs off a little too much off a Tyson Barrie rush that he ends up scoring on. The Jets do challenge it for offside but it was ruled that Barrie was in control of the puck as he was crossing the blueline. The penalty that came from that review attempt as well as the rather bad roughing penalty Tyler Myers takes doesn’t help matters for the Jets, but Connor Hellebuyck was fantastic in keeping the Jets ahead by one.

THIRD PERIOD

The Avalanche simply pour it on in the third period and for some reason the Jets who hustled and played really well in the first period all but left the building until the Avalanche finally tied it up halfway through the period just after a Jets penalty had expired as two Avs inexplicably get behind the Jets defense and Carl Soderberg tipped a Tyson Jost shot to even things up.
Once things were even at 2-2, the Jets actually do wake up some and string together a few good shifts but nothing overly threatening or to the net like they had in the first period as Grubauer holds steady.
A late Avalanche penalty for too many men gives the Jets one last chance to end things in regulation and they almost do with a frantic play around the Avalanche net with seconds left, but their stubborn determination to keep passing until they find the perfect shot prevents any shot from happening on what looks to be an open goal and the teams head off to overtime with Colorado already celebrating a clinched playoff spot.

OVERTIME

The penalty from the end of the period carries over a bit into the OT session so both teams play 4 on 4 for the 1:49 it takes the Avalanche to win the game on an Erik Johnson goal. Even with the brief man advantage to start, the Jets only manage one shot from long distance as again they get far too selective with their chances.
