The Jets shutdown a high powered Calgary Flames squad but it wasn’t exactly a defensive gem as Calgary’s furious third period effort pinned the Jets down for the last 20 minutes of play, but Connor Hellebuyck made 13 saves in the final frame to help the Jets finally get a win over the Pacific division leaders.

FIRST PERIOD

The Flames found iron with their shots three different times in the first period and then to add more insult to their rather decent first period effort, the Jets scored on a nifty face-off play with less than a minute left in the period as Ben Chiarot turned a rush to the net into a quick pass over to Mark Scheifele who made no mistake.
Shots finished even at 7-7 (partly thanks to those three post hits by the Flames) and Connor Hellebuyck had to be alert as the Flames also held a 4-3 edge in high danger scoring chances after twenty minutes of play.

SECOND PERIOD

The Jets get a couple of power plays in the first half of the second period and while the first was uninspired and only saw one shot on goal, it was the second power play the Jets had which was even worse as the Flames tied things up seconds into trying to kill a double minor with a three on two rush that the Jets were slow to recover on. It could have been an outright disaster if not for a broken play that resulted in a scramble around Mike Smith and a Mathieu Perreault goal to put Winnipeg back up by one.
Outside of the questionable man advantage efforts, the Jets were slightly better in the middle frame and out-shot the Flames 11-7 even though the even strength scoring chances – both regular and high danger – were even between both sides.
The Jets also do a bit better of a job protecting the middle of the ice in front of Hellebuyck, far better than what they had done in the first period at least.

THIRD PERIOD

There is going into defensive shells, and then there is whatever the Jets did in the third period to cling to a narrow victory.
The Flames out-shoot the Jets 13-3 and Connor Hellebuyck had to be stellar multiple times as the Jets couldn’t get seem to get out of their zone and took a couple of penalties in the period just to make things even harder on themselves.
Even strength scoring chances were 7-1 for Calgary. High danger chances were 2-0 in favor of the Flames.
