Back in October, the Oilers rallied down three goals to tie things up in the third and beat the Jets 5-4 in overtime. Tonight the Jets kind of flipped the script a tad. Sure, there was still a blown lead of two goals in the second, but a great third period got them a tie and then Josh Morrissey’s blast got by Talbot for a 5-4 overtime win.

The game starts off a bit slow as both teams almost seemed to play a bit over-cautious and not wanting to give either team boasting stand out offenses the first great scoring chance of the game. The Jets though do make a mistake with a turnover in their own end that ends up giving the Oilers the first goal of the game.

The Oilers take a penalty shortly after though and that gives the Jets a chance to open things up a little and even though the Oilers did well to contain the top unit, they couldn’t contain Mathieu Perreault.

And a few minutes after that, the Jets got a bit of a break with a deflected shot from Nik Ehlers off of Oilers defenseman Kevin Gravel.

The Jets finished the first period with a 16-11 edge in shots and five high danger scoring chances to the Oilers zero in what was overall a good performance, albiet a bit on the safe side as Winnipeg wanted to play their game but also not get into a track meet type game against Edmonton.

It started off so well for the Jets as Laine finally scored for the first time in December and the Jets had a 3-1 lead.

About five minutes later, the Oilers got that one back off a bit of a suspect goal.

Calling this a goal is likely the right call to make, but at the same time we’ve also seen goals like this not count as well. In fact since this type of goal has been scored against the Jets, you can be almost certain that in the next few weeks the Jets will score very identical to this one (probably off of Lowry’s skate) and it will be ruled a kicking motion and no goal.

At either rate, the goal gave the Oilers some life as shortly after they scored two in less than two minutes near the end of the second period.

The boxscore says that the Oilers outshot the Jets 13-6 in the middle frame and there was a stretch of about five or six minutes in the back end of the period where the Oilers were buzzing a bit more and making life difficult on the Jets in terms of getting out of their own end with the puck, but we’ve seen far more disastrous periods this season. Sometimes you have to chalk up goals to dumb luck such as the Oilers third goal was, or just a bad penalty kill like the fourth goal was.

Not that the Jets couldn’t have done things better. Hellebuyck’s rebound on that third goal was awful puck placement and the coverage on that PK was gross.

But the Jets weren’t badly outplayed in the second. Still, they gave up yet another multi-goal lead.

Just to give you an idea of how one-sided the third period was for the Jets, NaturalStatTrick had the scoring chances in the third at 15-2 Jets, with high danger chances finishing at a 7-2 ratio in favor of Winnipeg.

The Jets earned the tie in the third and probably deserved more if not for the goaltending of Cam Talbot.

But they did at least tie things up.

Hockey is a game of inches… A highlight we didn’t show on our Twitter feed was just how close Connor McDavid was to ending the OT before it barely started.

Instead seconds after McDavid rang the bell at one end, Josh Morrissey ended the OT before it barely started.

For Edmonton: Connor McDavid – This seems like the default answer for any Edmonton game really, but he is by far the most dangerous player on the ice. Two assists and really he had a couple of great chances for a goal.

For Winnipeg: Mark Scheifele – Somehow wasn’t named one of the three stars of the game. I guess three point nights are just supposed to be the ho-hum norm for him now. has a magical way of getting himself open in the slot and as we saw is also great at setting up the plays too.
