JNGD.S8.G23 Flight Plan: Laine On The Cusp Of History

For all of his accomplishments, there is one thing Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby was never able to achieve that Patrik Laine will likely do as early as tonight when he and the Winnipeg Jets take on Crosby’s Penguins… Score 100 goals before his 21st birthday.
Laine stands one away from the century mark and is still months away from his birthday in April so his place in a very exclusive list of players who have hit such an accomplishment is all but assured.

Of course, this isn’t to say that with this one feat, Laine puts himself on equal footing with Crosby. At the age of 31, Crosby’s hockey resume is as lengthy and impressive a distinguished record as some of the all-time greats in hockey.  Three Stanley Cups, seven time all-star, two time MVP, two time scoring champion, two time playoff MVP, two time gold medal winner, etcetera, etcetera. Had it not been an ankle injury that robbed him of 28 games in the 2007-08 season, Crosby as well likely would have been on the list of players to score 100 before turning legal age to drink in the United States.
The list of players who have hit 100 goals before the age of 21 is a short one. Six have only pulled off such a feat. Wayne Gretzky (of course), Jimmy Carson, Dale Hawerchuk, Steven Stamkos, Ilya Kovalchuk and Brian Bellows. Two Hockey Hall of Famers, with a third (Bellows) who should be in the Hall, and a fourth who could be a lock (Stamkos) depending how his career finishes out. And Laine has a chance to place himself quite high on that list over the next four months.
And the 100 goal mark is not the only history that Laine eyes going into tonight’s game.
Laine’s 16 goals for the month of November is four short of the all-time NHL record for most in a month. That record is co-owned by Teemu Selanne and Joe Malone with 20.
At the rate he’s been going this past week, would you bet against him hitting the mark?
