JNGD.S8.G11 Flight Plan: Detroit Might Be What Cures Jets Ills

Technically by way of the NHL schedule it’s the start of a three game road trip for the Winnipeg Jets tonight, but the Jets won’t play again in the friendly confines of Bell MTS Place for the next two weeks as they head out east this weekend and then really out east next week as they take on the Panthers in Finland.
But first, a date tonight with the Detroit Red Wings who are definitely not your father’s Red Wings any more.

Jets Notebook

  • The Jets last season split the two game set against Detroit, losing on the road in December by a 5-1 score, but rebounding at home two months later with a 4-2 win. The Jets have a 6-3-1 record against the Wings in their last ten games and all-time the Jets are 10-11-3 against them.
  • Dustin Byfuglien has played the Wings 35 times in his career and along with Bryan Little, leads the Jets in points scored against Detroit with 14. Big Buff has seven goals and seven assists while Little has picked up five goals and nine helpers.
  • At least the Jets power play has been pretty good? It’s scored in each of the last six games they played at home. Mark Scheifele and Patrik Laine each have three goals with the man advantage.
  • Blake Wheeler has a four game points streak going. Kyle Connor and Scheifele each have three game point streaks.
  • Dustin Byfuglien still needs just one point to hit the 500 points mark for his NHL career.

Red Wings Notebook

  • After a solid OT win against Florida on Saturday, the Red Wings played an absolute clunker against the Hurricanes on Monday that was only made to look reasonably ok thanks to the goaltending of Jimmy Howard.
  • Jacob de la Rose will make his Red Wings debut tonight. The 23 year old who was a 2nd round pick (34th overall) back in the 2013 NHL Draft was claimed from the Montreal Canadiens last week. The lanky 6’3″ forward never truly got a shot with the Canadiens as he appeared in 55 games for the habs last season, picking up four goals and 12 points.
  • Also making his season debut in Detroit tonight will be defenseman Mike Green who had off-season neck surgery to repair a herniated disc.
  • The Red Wings are struggling a great deal so far this season as you can likely tell by their last place in the league standings position. Their -16 goal differential is the worst in the NHL. They are in the bottom five of average shots per game and goals for. They have also given up the most goals against early on this season.
  • How bad are things in Detroit right now? Arby’s has taken pity on Wings fans (or depending on your opinion on Arby’s, decided to sunject them to even more torture) by offering free curly fries any time the Wings score three or more goals in a game. Previously, the bar was set on a Wings player getting a hat trick to earn the spuds. The Red Wings went all of last season without a single player scoring three times in a game.
  • Defenseman Dan Dekeyser (hand) and winger Evgeny Svechnikov (knee) are both on the Wings IR list.
