JNGD.R2G5 Recap: Jets One Win Away After 6-2 Win In Game Five

The Winnipeg Jets take game five by a 6-2 score as they took Nashville’s best shot – both on the ice and from the Preds fans in the stands – and shrugged it off with four goals in the second period to pace them to a win.
TALKING POINTS
- The Jets were very fortunate to be still tied at 0-0 after the first period as Nashville carried most of the play. The Preds had a 12-1 edge in total scoring chances after one and held a 4-0 edge in high danger scoring chances. If not for Connor Hellebuyck’s steady play as well as some lucky missed chances it could have been a lot worse. A big part of the problem was the Predators ability to shut things down with stacking three and sometimes even four men in yellow along the blue line.
- It also didn’t help that the Jets couldn’t complete a pass to save their lives in the first period.
- The Jets played more true to form in the second period. The Jets led in high danger scoring chances 5-2 and in total scoring chances 12-8 in that middle frame, helped a lot by the Jets getting a goal 7:44 into the period as Laine shot a puck off the midsection of Paul Stastny. That gave the Jets a bit of confidence and forced the Predators to open things up.

- Speaking of confidence, Kyle Connor got all his back with two goals on the night and six shots on goal and boy did the Jets need him to get going. Still no Nik Ehlers going tonight, but he also looks like he’s playing hurt. Midway through the second Ehlers got bumped down to the third line and it wouldn’t be a shock at all if he missed game six.
- That Scheifele goal to start the third period was so huge to help lock things down. 5-2 was a lot easier breathing than 4-2. Nashville helped things along by taking a really dumb penalty out of frustration which led to a Mathieu Perreault’s power play goal.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME
For Winnipeg: Kyle Connor – Two goals, six shots on goal and a super sweet play to walk around Ryan Johansen as if he was a pylon and feed a wide open Mark Scheifele. The Jets needed him to get going in the worst way and now he is.
For Nashville: Ryan Johansen – Not that the Preds had much to be happy about or many good performers, but despite being walked for the fifth goal against, Johansen had a solid effort with a goal and four shots on goal himself.

That’s it, back to Winnipeg! Game six goes Monday night, again another late start but it might not matter with how crazy the atmosphere is going to be with a chance to clinch! Puck drop is at 8:30 PM CST.
