You have overtime losses that kinda feel like wins because your team didn’t play all that well.. I don’t know if we can put tonight’s game in that category because Vegas played well and the Jets had their issues, but thanks to a questionable goal in the second period it does feel like the Jets were robbed a little.
Despite all that, is it too much to ask for a seven game series between these teams in mid-May?

TALKING POINTS

  • Yes the officiating was a tad suspect. Yes, that video review was bogus. Yes, no one knows what the hell goalie interference is any more. Let’s move on. (Until tomorrow when we’ll probably talk about it again)
  • For the first half of the game I thought the Jets were doing a great job of out-Vegas’ing Vegas. Vegas has won a lot of games by being fast and tenacious on the fore-check and for the first part of the game that’s what the Jets were doing rather effectively.
  • I’m not sure what Blake Wheeler was doing on that play that led to the Reilly Smith shorthanded goal and he probably will spend a little bit of time trying to figure it out as well. Just an all-time brain cramp that to be honest kind of sucked the life out of the Jets a bit.
  • The two highest scoring teams in the West, so of course they have a tight defensive battle right? Go fig.
  • Vegas did well to really shut down things in the third period and it’s a bit of a lesson for the home side as they need to pick up their game and find ways to generate offense against a team willing to sit on a lead. They did near the end of the third thanks to Kyle Connor, but the final shots in the third were 5-4 Vegas.
  • The Jets just can’t catch a break in overtime and it’s a combination of dumb luck (seriously, two crazy goal mouth scrambles and the Jets can’t hammer it home) and keeping players like Byfuglien who have issues keeping up with the pace of three on three and Laine who admittedly turns over the puck way too often trying to do too much with it.
