So much for those worries about Hutch.
The AHL All-Star, and back-to-back AHL goalie of the month over November and December, made his first NHL start of the season, stopped 23 pucks and helped the Jets earn a 3-1 win over the NHL leading Tampa Bay Lightning.
Never in doubt, right?

TALKING POINTS

  • Nic Ehlers is so much fun to watch. He only had the one assist tonight, but his speed and puck handling always gives teams fits. He had a couple of nice scoring chances and on most nights, those will go in.
  • On the defensive end of things, the Jets continue to struggle with zone exits and at times becoming too focused on covering the high end of the zone. It’s the latter that led to the first Tampa goal late in the first period and the former led to too many situations where the Lightning were able to get multiple chances on goal.
  • I thought the Jets defense was pretty good despite missing Trouba. Byfuglien took a couple of unfortunate penalties that will happen when you’re as big and strong as he is, but otherwise he was very responsible in his own end. Tyler Myers remains a bit of an adventure and Chiarot needs to not panic nearly as much when he has the puck, but otherwise the Jets defense kept things simple and effective.
  • A ton of credit to goalie Michael Hutchinson who was under fire on social media for playing in the AHL All-Star game the night before and tonight against the NHL’s best team. 23 saves on 24 shots faced. He did benefit from four goal posts hit by the Bolts, but you know what they say about goal posts and how goalies use them…

Matchups are limited to 5-on-5 situations. Tile size is scaled by Time On Ice and colour is scaled by adjusted Expected Goals differential. Blue represents a home team advantage and red represents a road team advantage.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME

For Winnipeg: Michael Hutchinson – If for no other reason, than for silencing the doubters and haters. Get a good night sleep Hutch!
For Tampa Bay: Louis Domingue – 34 saves on 37 shots faced and kept the Bolts in the game as long as he could. If Hutch is looking for inspiration for getting back into the NHL, all he needed to do was see how Domingue has battled in his career and looked very good tonight in a losing effort.

NEXT FLIGHT

That was the eastern leaders that just visited Winnipeg, now on Thursday the Jets get a visit from the west leading Vegas Golden Knights.
