JN Flight Plan: Time To Tame Some Cats In Sunrise

alt

The Winnipeg Jets start off a rather lengthy road trek that will feature four games through the southeastern US, a single game at home in Winnipeg and then three more games out in California. The first of these games is in Sunrise, Florida tonight as they visit the Florida Panthers who, like the Jets have had almost as crazy and unpredictable start to their season.
Don’t be surprised if this games goes into overtime and beyond based on how these two teams have played this season.

Last Panthers Game

The Florida Panthers fell behind 4-0 after a horrible second period in Boston, but they rallied with four goals of their own in the third period, two of those goals coming on the power play and they managed to steal a victory from the Bruins in a 5-4 shootout win.

Fun Panthers Facts…

  • Florida has played just six home games so far this season which is the third-fewest in the league. They have played 12 road games, which is the second-most among NHL teams.
  • With their four goal comeback against the bruins, the Panthers joined the Washington Capitals and Winnipeg Jets as the third team to record a comeback win of four or more goals this
season. It was the first time in franchise history that Florida overcame a four-goal deficit to win a game.
  • Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov each sit in the top five in Panthers franchise assists and points, and are sixth (Barkov) and seventh (Huberdeau) in franchise goals.
  • Aleksander Barkov enters today’s contest on a six-game point streak (5-6-11).
  • Joel Quenneville is one win away from a career 900th win as an NHL Head Coach

What They’re Saying…

The Florida Panthers announced today that former goaltender Roberto Luongo has been named the club’s Special Advisor to General Manager Dale Tallon. Luongo joins the Panthers hockey operations staff following an illustrious playing career that spanned 19 NHL seasons, including 11 with Florida.

However, take nothing for granted when watching the Panthers this season. Most games have come down to one goal, even when the Panthers or their opponents are cruising early on. Carolina were 4-0 up against the Panthers but wound up being pulled back to 5-4 before an empty net. Florida once led 4-1 against Tampa Bay but wound up holding on in the last seconds for a 4-3 win. That doesn’t even touch all the OT and shootout endings.

Last Jets Game

The Jets inadvertently took out the Avalanche’s starting goalie, only to have Colorado’s fourth string goalie come in and pretty much put up a shutout as the Jets couldn’t score with any of the 40 shots on goal while @Nathan MacKinnon scored twice to pace the Avs to a 4-0 win over Winnipeg.

Fun Jets Facts…

  • The Jets are 5-3-0 on the road and have won consecutive road games. Beginning tonight, the Jets play eight of 10 games on the road, the eight games are being played across three time
    zones.
  • The Jets are 2-4-1 against the Eastern Conference to start the season. Winnipeg has been outscored 26-17 in the seven games. Tonight is the first game for the Jets against a team from the Atlantic Division.
  • The Jets remain the least penalized team in the NHL this season with an average of 4.6 penalty minutes per game. Tuesday’s loss was just the sixth time in 19 games this season that the Jets took six minutes or more in penalties in a game.
  • MILESTONE WATCH: @Nikolaj Ehlers is one point away from 200 in his NHL career. @Blake Wheeler needs four points to reach 600 as a member of the Jets franchise.

What We’re Saying…

It’s been an absolute ghost-town in the slot this season. The Jets are really struggling at getting to the high danger areas on the ice. First of all, this is supported by the eye test, as the Jets more often than not sit back and take shots from the perimeter areas. There’s not much traffic in the crease and the opposing team can easily swat away rebounds or freeze the puck.
