JN Flight Plan #56: Ottawa Senators @ Winnipeg Jets

alt

On the surface, it looks like today’s contest – the first of a six game home stand for the @Winnipeg Jets along with the first game of the 20th annual “Hockey Day In Canada” – should be a bit of a lay up for the Jets as the @Ottawa Senators have one of the worst records in the NHL. It’s true that we may be a long way removed from the days of the 2013 “Pesky Sens” but underestimate this current Ottawa club at your own peril as they will at least make life tough for Winnipeg.

Last Senators Game

The Senators couldn’t do much against a relentless Colorado attack through the first two periods and had no way of getting past their shutdown defense in the third as they fell easily to the Avalanche by a 4-1 score.

Fun Sens Facts…

  • The Senators are scheduled to wear the Scotiabank NHL100 Classic sweater, which was introduced at their 2017 vs Montreal. The team earned a record of 5-5-0 while wearing
the same sweater in 2018-19 and are 2-2-3 this season when wearing it.
  • The Senators are 25-for-166 (15.1%) on the power play in 2019-20. Duclair and Ennis are tied for the team’s lead with five power-play goals each while Chabot (10 assists) is the club’s leader with 10 points on the power play this season.

What They’re Saying…

In fairness to Smith, this isn’t just about scoring. Sure, Duclair hasn’t scored in 16 (!) games now, but droughts happen, especially on a team as bad as the Sens. It’s the fact that despite some really good scoring chances, the entirety of his game has been way off lately. In his last three games, Anthony Duclair has posted an average Corsi rating of 34.84%, also seeing a decrease in ice time each contest.

But the reality is the Senators have plenty to offer if they do go to market. Dorion has his work cut out for him but he’s done well at previous deadlines. The club has 10 unrestricted free agents and while they won’t all be moved before the clock strikes zero, decisions have to be made on the likes of @Jean-Gabriel Pageau, @Dylan DeMelo, @Mark Borowiecki and @Ron Hainsey.

Last Jets Game

@Jansen Harkins scored his first career NHL goal, @Patrik Laine got his 20th and @Andrew Copp had the eventual game winner as the Winnipeg Jets cruised early, looked shaky late and held on to a 4-2 win over the @St Louis Blues.

Fun Jets Facts…

  • The Jets are 7-10-2 against the Sens since the franchise relocated to Winnipeg in 2011.
  • The Jets have 10 back-to-back sets this season, the eighth of which is this weekend…The Jets are 4-3-0 in the first and 3-4-0 in the second game of back-to-backs this season. They are also 6-2-1 in afternoon games this season, including 3-1-0 at home.
  • Winnipeg has scored in the first period in a season-high six consecutive games.
  • @Nikolaj Ehlers empty net goal the other night in St. Louis put him tenth on the all-time franchise list for goal scoring. He now needs one goal to pass Evander Kane (109) for ninth place on that list.

What We’re Saying…

After going down with an injury against St. Louis, Luca Sbisa is officially listed as day-to-day. The good part is that the injury wasn’t more serious, the bad part is that just as players are returning from injury, others keep going down. It’s been a lousy year for injuries in Winnipeg and the defense looks different nearly every single night. If Sbisa isn’t able to play tomorrow, look for Anthony Bitetto to return to the lineup.
