It’s Official: Steve Mason Signs With Jets

The Winnipeg Jets have a new number one.

Goaltender Steve Mason is officially a Winnipeg Jet.

Last season with the Philadelphia Flyers, Mason posted a 26-21-8 record in 58 appearances with the Flyers (54 of those games he started) and posted a .908 save percentage and a 2.66 GAA. The 29 year old has spent the last four and a half seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers after being traded there by the Columbus Blue Jackets in April 2013.

It was in Columbus that Mason burst onto the scene in 2009 winning the Calder Trophy as well as being a runner-up for the Vezina as the league’s top goalie and nearly being a finalist for that season’s Hart Trophy. Since then, Mason has struggled at times to regain that form, but he’s still had moments of brilliance that the Jets are hoping to get out of him for the 2017-18 season.

In nine NHL seasons, Mason has a career .911 save percentage and a 2.66 GAA. He’s also been to the playoffs three times in his career, the most recently having been the 2015-16 season where he struggled going 0-3 with a .852 save percentage.

It’s been long suspected since the end of this past season that the Jets were going to be in the market for a goalie, but one that wouldn’t mind sharing the work load with Connor Hellebuyck whom the Jets still have very high hopes for. Brian Elliott and to a much lesser extend Jonathan Bernier were also names considered in the week leading up to the opening of free agency.
