The Jets dropped their fourth straight game Monday night to
the Colorado Avalanche. The Jets were at
least able to force overtime and gain a point on the Dallas Starts, who had
their game postponed following some shocking events and a scary scene regarding
the health of Rich Peverley.

Observations
- Once again we see that the Jets issue has not been their
offensive play throughout the neutral zone.
Their problems have consistently started to arise when they don’t have
the puck. Opponents lately have been
having far too easy of a time gaining the Jets blue line and thus, create
offense. The drop off in shot production
seen when the Avs were forced to dump the puck in shows just how beneficial
better neutral zone defense could have been for the Jets. It’s an area that needs to get better if they
want to make a final run at the playoffs. - My wishes were granted for a large portion of this game, as
the Ladd – Little – Frolik line were reunited.
As he has done for a large portion of this year, Frolik was a smart and
dominant player in the neutral zone throughout this game. I’ve mentioned this before, but it honestly
seems as if Michael Frolik just can’t make a wrong decision when the puck is on
his stick. He easily accounted for the
drop in production from Bryan Little, and that line was ultimately a positive
possession group. - Want a good reason as to why you can never look at one
statistical area to analyze a player?
Dustin Byfuglien’s performance from last night is a good one. He was anything but productive in his neutral
zone play, but overall I thought he had a heck of a game. Credit a lot of that to Blake Wheeler and
Evander Kane’s time with him throughout the evening. - I was a little surprised to see that Trouba didn’t have any
controlled entries against Colorado, as he and Stuart were pretty positive
possession players on the night. Usually
that leads to Trouba being more willing to jump in the play, but I would suspect
an emphasis on preventing chances was laid out considering how easily the Avs
brought the puck in. - I haven’t mentioned this in a while, so I guess now is as
good a time as any to remind you all of this little tid bit. The Jets have continued to struggle all year
when it comes to generating shots off of offensive zone opportunities. For a team without a truly elite scorer, they
need to be able to take advantage of opponent’s mistakes. Instead, they too often lose draws or
mishandle the puck and throwaway easy opportunities.
Montoya Performance
To be completely honest, I barely noticed the Jets
goaltending in this game. Which is quite
a rare event. Al Montoya seems to be
much more steady and relaxed when making saves and facing pressure, so unless
he is mixing it up and an opponent he doesn’t seem to cause much stress. Overall
I wouldn’t say this was one of his better games, but we’ve seen plenty of worse
goaltending performances this year.
Let’s just call this one an average outing.

Quick Explanations
Pretty hard to blame this on Montoya at all. Bogosian attempts to tie up Nathan MacKinnon
but the puck apparently bounces off of him instead and into the net. Sometimes throwing the puck to the front of

I’ve blamed worse goals on goaltender before, so this one
goes on Montoya’s shoulders. There was
limited traffic in front, and Monty just got beat clean. You can question why the faceoff was even in
the Jets end, and how nobody seemed to notice the interference on Setoguchi,
but that puck probably should have been stopped.

Duchene. It’s hard to blame Toby because he did technically did knock the puck
away; it just took a ridiculous bounce.
It’s also hard to really blame Montoya, as he reacted to the play but
the bounce completely fooled him.
Sometimes you just have to give credit to the opponent and some bad
luck. This is one of those times.

- How will the lineup change?
John Albert suffered an injury pretty early into this game, and is
status for Wednesday’s game is still up in the air. If I was Paul Maurice, I would be very
hesitant to move Frolik back to center.
He simply wasn’t producing much there, and we have seen how effective he
is on the wing all season. In a perfect
world we would be seeing Eric O’Dell sometime soon, but I get the feeling
that’s not happening either. I’m curious
to see what ends up happening. - Who starts in net? I
would assume Pavelec would get the nod against Vancouver. At this point it seems like Al Montoya will
have to solve world hunger before he gets a serious look at feeding this team
wins in goal. I don’t like it, but that’s
the way it is. - Can the Jets get a hat trick? The Canucks let in 7 goals in the third period
against the New York Islanders. Crazy
things have been happening to this team lately, so it would be nice to see the
Jets take advantage of it. Let’s get a hat trick. Somebody. Please. We can’t
make a player for player trade at this point; so let’s try to break at least
one crappy streak.

The events that went on in Dallas last night really hit home
the point that these amazing athletes really are human. It’s great to hear that Rich Peverley is doing
better, and huge props go out to the medical staff and doctors involved with
the situation. I had a friend at the game,
and hearing from him what it was like in the building really is eerie. Best wishes from us at Jets Nation to Rich
