Despite the result, and various lulls throughout the game,
the Jets ended up leading both the possession statistics and the scoring
chances in the end.  It was far from the
worst game the Jets have played under Paul Maurice, despite the talk that was
rampant on Twitter afterwards.

Observations

From the first period on, the Jets were mostly in control of
the scoring chances.  To me, the big
story (and potentially the reason the Jets lost this game) was how ineffective
the Jets power play was.  In five
opportunities the Jets only managed two chances and gave one up.  That’s far from a mediocre game.  That’s just brutal.
Mark Stuart had another decent game against the
Islanders.  I feel as if his recently
improved game has allowed Trouba the ability to loosen up a bit, and jump into
rushes much more often.  I’m not
convinced Stuart can continue this level of play on the second defensive
pairing, but for now we might as well enjoy the ride.
Toby Enstrom continues to be one of, if not the, most
underestimated defensemen not only on this team, but possibly in the league.
The Kane – Jokinen – Byfuglien grouping really didn’t work
to well throughout the night.  Actually
it was when Kane and Setoguchi swapped lines that some real production came out
of both groups.  Until Scheifele got hurt
that is.  Then everything went nutty, and
everyone got a little time with everyone.
The only grouping that seemed to get a real spark out of the
random shuffle was the Ladd – Little – Wheeler line.  That was likely due to their previous time
and obvious chemistry from the “only one line ever does anything” days. I
wouldn’t be surprised if they are a unit heading into the game against the
Kings tomorrow.

Last Thought

The Jets are taking on the possession dominant Kings on
Thursday evening.  Judging from the Kings
reputation of not being able to put teams away (or really ever score goals) the
Jets have a chance to steal another game despite their lineup troubles right
now.  It’ll take good performances from a
fair number of players, but it’s possible.
