Game 59 @ Washington: Numbers Game

The Jets put together yet another decent neutral zone performance Thursday night against the Capitals. An inability to take advantage of their opportunities and generate scoring chances was the downfall of the Jets on this night.
I’ve been sick as a dog and swamped with work lately, so here are all the numbers with a bit of interpretation for the Caps game.

Observations
The Jets may not have had the quantity of entries that the Caps did, but they were much more efficient in the offensive end. I’ve been pretty impressed with the Jets neutral zone play lately, but on this night they were the lesser of the two teams in that zone of the ice.
Buff had one of his better games in the neutral zone against Washington. He hasn’t been very effective for the most part, but I’ll give credit where credit is due.
The Jets offensive zone start production continues to be a problem. This is likely still a result of their low, low faceoff percentages. They can often overcome it by forcing turnovers, but lately that’s been a missing link to their game. Hopefully they can turn that around sooner rather than later.
Pavelec Performance
I don’t think Pavelec specifically cost the Jets this game, but at some point allowing 4 goals in the majority of his games just isn’t acceptable. That point was passed a long, long time ago. Goalies are paid to made saves. Pavelec simply doesn’t make the ones the Jets need him to.
Montoya will get the start Saturday afternoon against the Blues, so I’m suddenly more optimistic about the Jets chances.

The Jets were right with the Caps throughout the game, until the ultimately fell apart in the third period. They controlled possession until that point, and were mostly able to prevent any major breakdowns. Unfortunately, they just weren’t able to hold on.
Enstrom and Bogosian were dominated for far too much of this game. A pairing that has been pretty silent, and therefore pretty damn good, lately was exposed quite heavily on Friday. Hopefully this was just a one game event, and they can bounce back on Saturday afternoon.
The Jets penalty kill did a terrific job against a normally deadly Caps power play. They were aggressive and did their best to prevent the Caps from setting anything up for too long. It’s been nice to rely on the PK unit throughout this year, as it ranks 8th in the league.
Final Thought
As I said above, I’ve been fighting off sickness and trying to get schoolwork done lately so I apologize for not having these posts ready right away. Let’s just say the Olympic break is coming at the perfect time for me.
The Jets have their final game before the break Saturday afternoon against the Blues, and will be looking to move themselves within one point of a playoff spot. They have done a great job putting themselves in a position to make a push, but I fear how long this streak of high shooting percentages will continue on.
