Before the Jets square off against the New Jersey Devils tonight, take a look at the scoring chance totals from Friday’s game against the Stars. Maybe you’ll even learn a little bit about score effects! And that’s what Sundays are for.

Thoughts

You can see in this game exactly why most of us look at game-close or 5 on 5 stats for analysis. For the most part, you can only take the first period of this game very seriously for judgment of this team as a whole, as it was very clear the Stars decided to back off from their forecheck and conserve energy for the next night in Minnesota. Thus, the Stars’ even strength chances dropped dramatically, while the Jets’ increased as the game went on. For this reason, I also do not put much merit into the “much better play” from the Jets that was talked about so much during the game. It’s easy to play hard and look good when the other team is backing off.
That being said, I think this game would have been interesting to watch if Ondrej Pavelec was able to play better out of the gate. Although they were out-chanced, many of them (including one of the goals) were due to rebounds in close to the net that otherwise may have not been available.
The fact that Mark Stuart was still a -7 in this game is pitiful. He is the next example of Noel loving his veterans and once again will find himself on the ice tonight against the Devils. Clitsome has made the more glaring mistakes, but Stuart is not good. Stuart should be the scratch tonight.
In the first period the pairing of Bogosian – Clitsome went -2 five on five. Bogosian – Trouba went +1. Just saying.

Moving Forward

It looks like the lines will be shuffled around for tonight’s game against the Devils. Following the lack of anything really coming from Ladd-Little-Wheeler, and the drop off from the second line, I can’t say I’m very surprised. It’ll be quite interesting to see if this results in any immediate improvements, because thus far nothing but a 4 goal deficit has resulted in any positive.
