As great as it was to see the Jets win and get Paul Maurice his second victory behind the bench, I can’t help but be a little nervous about all the positive vibes around the local media. The Jets were fortunate that this game was against the offensively-inept Flames. Possession numbers were close, but the Flames just were not able to generate the scoring chances or offense that the Jets could, and it ultimately cost them the game.

I say the Jets had an ability to create offense with a pretty serious grain of salt. Sure they tripled Calgary’s production at even strength, but that’s only because Calgary had such low numbers. The Jets were anything but a force on Thursday night.

Jacob Trouba had a heck of a game, despite his partner for the majority of the night. Trouba not only limited the chances against (most of the team did), but he was able to create offense at even strength as well. Not to mention he scored a beauty of a goal. The kids have looked great lately. It’s nice to see.

It’s no shock to me that the only defenseman who finished in the minus column was Mark Stuart. Paul Maurice mentioned today that he uses analytics when he looks at his team. Hopefully, that means Mark Stuart is on his way out of the lineup at some point.

Ever since being separated from Chis Thorburn, Olli Jokinen has been playing extremely well. He, more than anyone else, has seemed to really spoken out about how much he likes Paul Maurice. Is it because of whom Claude put on his line? Or maybe because he really feels Maurice is setting things on the right path? Either way, if he keeps this play up it can only mean good things for the Jets.

Byfuglien had another productive game as a forward against Calgary. It’s not surprising that he is having success in this role, but I’m not buying into it being the best move for the team long term. The Jets have faced a couple teams who have struggled with offense in a row now, so the true test will be this upcoming trip to California. If they can keep their defensive game together in those situations, I may become more convinced.

A point of concern to me is that the Flames power play really seemed to create opportunities against the Jets. They didn’t score, but were buzzing a fair bit, and looked poised to get the game closer as the night went on. Hopefully Maurice can address this.

The Oilers come to town Saturday afternoon in the first matchup between the two teams since the debacle on December 23rd. It should be an easy game for the guys to get motivated for, so I would expect one heck of an effort.
